Hey guys (take two). Apologies for the complete lack of updates but we have been without internet for a while so I'm afraid here is one super long update. Please stay interested until the end, there will be questions.
We left you in Nha Trang with the witches of Eastwick and got the night bus to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) which we were both apprehensive about as we had heard it was going to be busier than Hanoi and much smellier. However, we were very pleasantly surprised and really liked it. We arrived early morning and set off on a historical and cultural voyage, check us. First we headed to the Reunification Palace. Luckily an English speaking guide showed us around otherwise it would have been the two of us wandering around going "hmm nice room." We then went to the War Remnants Musuem which was quite possibly the most chilling place we had seen so far. There were photos that I wll never forget.
The next day we went on an organised trip to Cha Cha Temple and the Cu Chu tunnels. We had a guide called Jackie Chan who was a Vietnamese Gene Simmons. He was more importantly a solider during the war and a prisoner. We had seen pictures and heard of the tunnels but they were more significant and scary than either of us had realised. We did however managed to crawl through 120metres of the things in the pitch black. It was weird to say the least.
The following day we left HCMC and headed into Cambodia more specifically Phnom Pehn. Unfortunately no one we had spoken to or any of the guide books we had read told us that the entire city was closed for a week long festival. So we arrived in a ghost town, which was also the smelliest place we had ever been to. We had been looking forward to seeing the Killing Fields and the Palace but it was all shut, big big boo!!!!
We spent the evening sat on our balcony drinking a beer watching tumbleweed pass beneath us, along with a lot of rubbish. We were hungry, as the only place we could find for food was a mall which served the worst burger and chips ever seen, and bored so left the very next morning.
We took another bus to Siem Reap, which we loved. We arrived late evening and they dumped us in the middle of no where but they did gate us in, for safety we think. There were a couple of Danish guys there to who were also abandoned so we shared a tuk tuk on the now frequent chore of finding somewhere to sleep. Funnily enough the tuk tuk driver took us to his guest house which was bearable even though I still hate cold showers. I mean what is the point.
The next day we got up at 4am to go to Angkor Wat and see the sunrise. Angkor Wat is the biggest religious building in the world and it was amazingly stunning. We then spent the rest of the day being ferried around by our non English speaking tuk tuk driver around 8 other temples. Boy you guys are going to enjoy the photos in 2009 as Lacey still hasn't worked out how to put them on the computer. It was an incredible day we even got to reinact scenes from Tomb Raider.
We then spent the next day chilling and walking around Siem Reap and saw the most enormous vampire bates. Tesco you will not believe it. the noise was incredible and there must have been thousands of them. Some were flying around, in the morning, and their wing spans were about 1metre wide. We saw more temples and walked along the river which showed us much more about local life.
We hen spent the afternoon playing pool and drinking 25p beer in tru Kimmy and Lacey style. Sounds bad but we still havent even been merry on our travels and now have not drunk wine since 19th Sept. Blimey, is it bad I can remember the day.
We are going to save this here and move on to Thailand on another blog for fearof this crashing again. Please read on, we will try and get funnier.
