Kevin & Monique's round-the-world adventure!
We arrived in Nha Trang late on the morning of Friday 27 July after a pretty rough night on the train. The sleeper cabins were all sold out, so we were in the "soft seats", padded seats that recline slightly. The train was really run down and we got on to find the couple in front of us were asleep and had reclined their seats as far back as possible. We actually couldn't get into our seats as the crusty tray-table was broken and just hung down giving us even less room. After some hard taps on the shoulder and some hand gesturing, we managed to get in and settled before the seats reclined again, trapping us for the rest of the night :-/ The cabin had aircon but it got so cold in the night that we needed to huddle together under the sarong. It was a very long night and we were very thankful when the train pulled into the station.
Once again we went in search of a place to stay. Whenever you emerge from a train station or bus you are swamped by people peddling guesthouses/hotels etc. and this was no different. Once or twice we have been interested and have followed them for "2 minutes" to get to the guesthouse. However, it's never 2 minutes and we land up getting annoyed. We finally found a place, got settled and then went for some lunch down by the beach. Nha Trang was another pleasant surprise. The beach is so close to the accomodation area and it is a long stretch of white sand with stunning turquoise water which looks very inviting. After lunch we came back to our room for a rest. It was boiling outside so we decided to go to the beach once it cooled down a bit. We woke up to find it was dark (whoops - clearly we really needed to sleep) so we headed out for dinner instead.
We haven't really found good street food in Vietnam. We enjoyed eating at the roadside stalls in Thailand and even Laos. Vietnam is quite different though... We tried Pho (noodle soup with meat and sprouts and greens) a few times but didn't enjoy it very much, other times we weren't sure what the restaurants we serving and no one can speak English to explain. So, in Nha Trang we settled for a pizza and what a good pizza it was! :) We bought ice-creams afterwards and wandered down to the beach. It was Friday night all the family's were out and about. There was a big paved area near the sea where a whole bunch of kids were rollerblading - it was the first time we had seen a big public space being used during our time in Vietnam.
Saturday we slept in a bit and then took another wander around town. Tourism is obviously the main part of the economy - the streets are just lined with hotels, massage places, tour operators and restaurants. We picked a place for lunch and then headed back to the room. Monique stayed indoors to escape the heat, while Kevin went down to the beach to get a bit of sun. That evening we found a great Italian place for dinner and then returned to the room to do admin.
Sunday was a pretty quiet day. It was mostly overcast and rainy which didn't make for a very good beach day :-/ Monique took the gap and went to get a foor treatment at the nearby spa, while Kevin stayed in the room and watched some Olympics. That night we got a bit lost trying to find a specific restaurant, but eventually had a delicious meal at a French place near to our hostel. Afterwards we headed back to pack.
Monday we woke up early and set out on the long walk to the train station. When we arrived we were drenched with sweat and were told by another traveller that the train to Saigon was delayed by 3 hours. We confirmed that with one of the officials so we went in search of a coffee shop to kill a few hours. We had bought baguettes to eat for our lunch which we ate on the sneak in the restaurant while we did some admin. Afterwards we walked back to the train station, where we endured another hour delaybefore finally being able to board the train. The carriage we were in was a lot nicer than most of our previous train journeys, so we were in good spirits as we set off to Ho Chi Minh City.
