We arrived in Hue (pronounced 'whey') at around lunch time on Sunday 22 July. We learned our lesson from last time and immidiately bought our train tickets for the next two legs. The map in our guide book wasn't very clear, but it looked like it wasn't too far into town, so we decided to walk. Unfortunately, we went a bit of course and in the end we walked for over an hour with our heavy packs on :-/ After finding a place to stay, we had a shower and then went out to get something to eat. We returned for a well deserved nap and then headed out in the evening to have a look around and find a place for dinner.
Monday we were up early to go and explore The Citadel. We had a quick breakfast on the way and then walked across the river. We spent the next few hours wandering around the vast 2km by 2km moated complex. Unfortunately, many of the buildings were destroyed by American bombs in the late 60's and whats left is fast falling into disrepair. Maintenance does not seem high of the city's agenda, which is a pity as the area could be quite a cool attraction similar to the Grand Palace in Bangkok. On our way back we stopped at the market to pick up a few things and then found somewhere to eat before heading back to our room to rest. Later that evening when things had cooled down, we ventured out for a quick supper and then went back to pack our bags for the next day.
Tuesday we checked out, had a quick breakfast around the corner and then began the long walk back to the train station. This time we didn't get lost, but we did have to double-back when we discovered that a bridge had been washed away :-/ We made it to the station on time though, and soon we were on our way to Da Nang, 3 hours away.
