We woke up on the train just in time to see the sun rising over forests of Christmas trees and frozen lakes - a very cool way to start the day. It was Tuesday 13 November when Patricia, the lady who ran the cottages we were staying in, kindly met us at the train station in Gallivare and took us back to Porjus. On the way back we stopped off at the supermarket for some supplies and at the ski slopes for a quick look. The sun was already setting as we drove back - very pretty, but it was only around 15:00 :-/ We got settled into the cottage where, despite our help, Monique managed to cook up an delicious roast chicken for dinner. For the rest of the evening, our time was split between watching DVDs in the lounge and watching the amazing Northern Lights display outside.
We really were so lucky - the lights that night were excellent! No cloud cover and lots of solar activity made for a stunning display. Unfortunately it's impossible to capture what the sky looks like in a photo - the lights move and swirl and change constantly - it's just fascinating, really like nothing you've ever seen. In the end, we eventually called it a night at around 03:00.
Wednesday we enjoyed a bit of a sleep in. After lunch, we went for a walk in the snow along some of the snow-mobile trails in the nearby forest. We got back to the cottage just as the sun was setting and, after a quick dinner, settled back into the routine of watching DVD's and stepping outside to gaze up at the sky. After our last look outside at about 01:00, we realised that the lights weren't going to be on that night, so we headed off to bed.
Thursday wasn't much different to the previous day - we slept in, had lunch, and then went for a walk into the town to get some air. After dinner we again chilled out in front of the TV, periodically checking the sky outside. However, again there was no activity so we went off to bed.
Friday we were up early to finish packing and then, after a quick breakfast, Patricia gave us and our bags a lift down to the local bus station. It was freezing, so fortunately we didn't have too long to wait for our bus to arrive to take us to our next stop - the slightly bigger town of Gallivare.
