Our train from Jaipur arrived in Udaipur late in the afternoon on Saturday 22 September. Again, we were super grateful for a pickup and soon we were enjoying the view out over the city from our guesthouse's rooftop restaurant. Since we were both still feeling quite sick, we ate quickly and then returned to our room to sleep. That evening we emerged and decided to go down to the lake. Unfortunately the tourist map that we were given was pretty bad and, embarrasingly, we were unable to find it! We did find quite a cool spot up a narrow alley where we had a light meal and played some connect-4 (turns out Monique is quite good!) before heading back to bed.
Sunday we were feeling worse so just slept in and then decided to take it easy for the rest of the day. We strolled down to the lake where there was some ceremony happening, so got to hear all the singing and see the colourful outfits. Later, we found a place on the bank for breakfast with a great view. We ended up spending the rest of the day at the guesthouse, either chilling up on the roof or napping in the room.
Monday Kevin was starting to feel a bit better so went off to visit the City Palce while Monique rested. The palace is the largest in Rajasthan (it's actually several palaces grouped together) and was the former capital of the Mewar empire. The Mewar family still live in a section of the complex but have opened up the rest as a museum and, as with all the other Indian palaces we've visited, everything is huge and luxurious. It was pretty interesting seeing how the Maharana's lived though the ages, from the 1500's until now. That evening we ate dinner at the guesthouse and then got ice-creams for dessert and wandered through the city for a while, before heading off to bed.
Tuesday Monique headed straight off to a cooking course (was told to come hungry) while Kevin headed up the roof for breakfast and a newspaper - great way to start the day :-) Afterwards I (Kevin) walked up the road to visit the Jagdish Temple - an old but not very big Hindu temple near the palace. The architecture and the carvings are very impressive but it didn't take too long to see everything. Afterwards I took a long walk accross town to see Motimagri, a large monument built to an important warrior's horse, before returning to the room to rest. Monique returned soon afterwards with a big bag full of yummy food to taste and stories of all the cooking fun she'd had (was the only one on the course so was one-on-one with the cool cook lady.) Later that evening we walked back down to an old palace building by the lake where we watched a very cool cultural show featuring tradtional dancing and puppetry. Ice-creams on the way back to bed just topped off a perfect evening.
Wednesday was our last day in Udaipur (and the North) so, after a quick breakfast, we walked around the city for the last time and did some last-minute shopping. Then it was back to the room to pack. Since our train was only leaving at around 20:30 (we were fortunately able to get a late check-out) we had some time to do a bit of admin and have a quick nap. We made our way to the station a bit early to try and sort out some train tickets and then, after getting dinner and a few snacks, boarded the train for our long journey South (almost 48 hours on the road) to the chilled-out beaches of Goa!
