We arrived back in Uyuni from our salt flats tour at around 3pm on Wednesday 21 March. It turned out our whole car group wanted to get to Sucre in a hurry, so we immediately walked to the only airline office in the town (TAM - a military airline) to enquire. The flight to Sucre is only on Fridays and is not too expensive (around R250) so Michelle and Ferencia helped us get tickets. Once sorted, we went straight to our hostal for a much-needed hot shower. That evening, most of our tour group met at this cool little pizza place for dinner.
Uyuni is a bit of a strange town. It is obviously very touristy - almost everything revolves around foreigners visiting the salt flats. (However, this may change soon as huge amounts of lithium, around 43% of world reserves, were discovered recently-ish under the salt.) The town is not very pretty (quite brown and dusty) but its quite safe to walk around.
Thursday we got to sleep in a bit and then grabbed a quick breakfast at the hostal. We had only booked one night so we needed to move out of our accomodation, which was sad 'cause it was amazing :-( We checked into another hostal accross the plaza which was also where our friends from the tour were staying :-) Once settled, we hit the internet cafe to try and do some admin/email/facebook etc. but it was very slow. I was still out of action with the flu so went back up to sleep while Monique joined Jamie and Ilaina for a walk around the market. In the late afternoon Monique and I took a walk around the market, before heading to a nearby Italian restaurant on the plaza for dinner - huge burger + spagetti bolognaise :-) We stopped at the chemist on the way home for some more meds.
Friday morning we were up early to wait for the taxi to the airline office in town, which never came. A short walk and we were there to check-in. We got a lift to the airport (which actually was't finished being built yet) and waited for the plane to arrive. When it did, our luggage was loaded and we waited to board for our 50 minute flight to Sucre :-)
UPDATE: We were then told that it was raining in Sucre and the plane can't land in the rain, so it would be delayed for 2 hours :-( About 3 hours later (midday) we were told that it was still raining in Sucre so the plane wasn't going there any more, and we could either get a refund or pay more money and fly to La Paz (opposite direction) Disapointed, we opted for the refund and headed back to the town for another night :-/ The dutch girls helped us arrange bus tickets for the next morning, and then we all headed back to the same hostal. We had lunch at this cool little mexican place on the plaza and then had a nap. That evening, the four of us had a yummy llama dinner at a place called Extreme Fun Pub. Its a pretty cool place - the floor is covered in salt and the tables are also made out of salt. They also have some pretty 'interesting' drinks on offer ;-)
Saturday morning we were up early, wolfed down an omlette at that mexican place and then walked to the bus station to catch our bus. Turns out you can't go directly to Sucre, the bus goes to Potosi and you must sort yourself out from there. The buses in Bolivia are pretty bad compared to Argentina and Chile (there its like being on an airoplane.) Ours left on time, however, and soon we were well on our way - finally.
