September 29 - Escalante
Another rainy day in the desert….who'd have thought. We drove the RV to Escalante which is 40 mi away, arriving around lunch.
After checking into the campground at Escalante, Kevin received a call that would require him to head back to the city for a couple days to look after some business concerns.
After doing some quick research, we determined that the best thing to do would be to head to Las Vegas. Karen would be able to stay in a safe comfortable campground at a reasonable rate, and Kevin would have easy access to the airport and flights on points.
But we still had the rest of the day to enjoy. So we headed north on Highway 12, rated as one of the most scenic scenic Drive scenic drives in the entire United States. It didn't disappoint. Lots of ups and downs, twists and turns, and at one point we drove for about a mile where we were on the top of the mountain range, with 1000 foot drop on both sides, and in a couple of spots no shoulders at all. We had a down a side road at Boulder Utah, which took us directly into a dark red Canyon that you could drive through for miles. We took a quick pitstop at a slot canyon, where we were able to walk in about 200 yards, with 150 foot walls on both sides of us.
