Monday 7th September - Valletta
We went on a Cruise supported trip today to Mdina, Mosta and to a handcraft village. We started off in the bus and Olivia was our guide and ended up as a very knowledgable young lady.
Malta is over 3000 years old as far as written language goes but dates back to 2000BC when it was first settled.
It seems that it has been settled and then conquered by almost everyone except the Germans during the 2nd World War. Malta has a very colourful language and history and Olivia told us all sorts of facts and dates.
We headed first for the town of Mosta, which means Middle, and hence is in the middle of the island. We stopped and went and had a look at the domed church in Mosta and heard about the night in 1943 when the Germans were bombing Malta and a bomb went straight through the dome and failed to explode when the church was full of people sheltering from the bombing.
It's referred to as the Miracle of Mosta! There is even a replica bomb in one of the rooms out the back of the church just to remind everyone.
The church doesn't look anything special from the outside but after entering you can't help think of the dollars that has been spent on the inside.
