Tuesday - Kompong Pluk Floating Village
We got up Tuesday and decided to book to go to the floating village.
Our Australian friend we'd met back in Laos, Dylan, had arrived in Siem Reap that morning and had discussed coming with us but was far too tired from his trip still so gave it a miss. A guy Yaya (pronounced aiya) which was an hour tuk tuk trip to the boat. This tuk tuk trip was mental and we held on tight for dear life. At one point it went totally off course and we ended up stuck in a bush, Lauren and I had to get out while he pulled the tuk tuk out to safety.
We got there and got in a boat to get on another boat and floated along to the village. The village was brilliant to see, it's a completely different type of life and I found it fascinating to see how they lived. I took lots of pictures and we were taken to an area where you could get on a smaller boat where a lady took us through mango trees for an extra $5 each. It was so peaceful and tranquil, we both loved being paddled around and admiring the scenery and sounds of the birds. On our return to the main boat we were then taken to a huge lake where it would have been great to watch the sun set but we were too early. On our trip back through the village to take us back to the tuk tuk we both sat very quietly and afterwards said how we'd both done some deep thinking on the trip back. I remember seeing a little girl no older than 6 using a machete knife to chop up a large piece of fruit, and I watched as all the kids had chores and a purpose of contributing to their communal family way of living, and I thought about how children are raised in England and felt it's better to give them responsibility at a younger age.
When we got back to the hostel Dylan came and met us and we went for a wonder into the night market and got some cheap local food and had a wander around. The water festival was on (some festival that goes on for 3 days) so it was super busy everywhere. We had a couple of beers and stopped off on pub steet which is more than one street that has loads of bars and restaurants on, and had a $1.50 cocktail on a little stand out in the street. I didn't feel like drinking so asked if we could call it a night, Lauren and I went back and then Dylan had carried on out into the night.
