We visited the Acropolis of Rhodes. This construction is an interesting mix of ancient and not quite as ancient. It consists of a fortress built by the Knights of St John, around 1309 AD but at the very top there is a temple to Athena Lindia which is much older. We climbed roughly 300 stairs up the the acropolis at Lindos and the views were spectacular. The Palace of Knossos was our main place to visit today. I learned about this palace in High School and have always wanted to visit. The site is quite large and a great deal of it is reconstructed, mainly by the archaeologist , Evans. Unfortunately he used a lot of concrete in his reconstructions , which is not in keeping with today's practices. There are only a few reproductions of the amazing friezes that were found here. What a beautiful place . Santorina is an island that was once an active volcano. Around 1650 BC the volcano massively erupted and the centre collapsed. The ocean rushed in and filled the space that was left. The volcano is now dormant, but not extinct and it is monitored for any sign of new activity. The houses are perched on top of the cliffs. Hi everyone.Sorry it has been a while since I last posted. We have been out and about almost everyday. We had a busy day at Athens. Up at 5:30 for a 7:00 start. We visited the Parthenon as you can see in our photo. Part of it is under reconstruction so there was a lot of scaffolding around.
