Kerry and Rick - On Tour
Rick´s been showing me up and doing all the blogs, so I´d better get my act together and tell you a bit about Sucre :o)
Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia, as written in their constitution, but all the power is in La Paz. It´s known as the ´White City´ because all the building in the centre are painted white. It is a really beautiful city and we were delighted to see it after spending the last few days in not so pretty towns! The minute we arrived, the whole group liked the place.
Historically, it´s the city from where the Spanish rules Bolivia, and especially the silver mines and where all the rich Spanish families liked. It´s got lovely colonial architecture and some really good museums, espcecially the Casa de Liberdad, which explained Sucre´s history and the lead up to Bolivan Indepence in 1825. It´s a lovely city to walk around too with excellent chocolate shops and a class market that was a mish-mash of stalls, smoothie stands and clothes shops.
On our second day, we visited the Dinosaur Park which has a wall covered in dinosaur footprints from more than 60 million years ago! In the park itself they had life size models of all the dinosaur that have been discovered in South American. The biggest was over 36 foot long!
Our last day, we went for a treck in the mountains outside Sucre, which was brilliant because we actually had to cross rivers, climb walls and scramble down hills, as opposed to following a well worn track! It was great to get out and walk around because we´ve spent a lot of time in buses and 4*4s in the last while.
We had some good food and great steaks in Sucre too, so we´re getting ourselves prepared for Argentina. Sucre was a pretty and interesting town and definitely worth a visit if you´re heading to Bolivia.
