The Discovery Coast
We started our southern coastline adventure at Port MacDonnell and drove onto the little town of Nelson first thing in the morning. We went out to the Ocean Beach at Nelson and it was only a short walk from the car park, over the sand dune to the beach where there was HEAPS of cuttlefish washed ashore. The surf looked pretty rough, and although it was fine weather, still cold and windy. From here, we drove around Discovery Bay and out onto Cape Bridgewater where we walked onto the lookout above the Blowholes. Unfortunately, the "blow" wasn't working but standing on top of the cliffs was an awesome experience - nearby is the tallest seacliff in Victoria at 130m, so we were probably 100+ metres above the sea and Bec spotted a seal swimming in the water below! We also saw the Petrified Forest (that's not really a petrified forest!) and while we were there Callen had fun playing in the sand and little potholes. After a quick bite for lunch, we headed onto Portland and the weather was just beautiful for sitting along the coast watching the waves. We drove out to the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, then back to Yellow Rock and watched some surfers and a guy on a paddle board there. We had heard that 2 southern right whales had been spotted offshore that morning, but we didn't have any luck seeing them. After grabbing some groceries we then drove along the coast as far as we could before getting back on the highway. We found a camp site beside the Fitzroy River, which was nice but a bit wet underfoot and the river was quite high given all the rain that has fallen in the region lately.
