I just spent 7 days in Sharm El Sheik with Lauren and Aimee for a much needed relaxing break. We had the perfect weather, clear blue skies everyday and it was between 25-28c everyday with a gentle breeze.
I spent a day diving, it was incredible. I had high expectations as heard it was one of the best places in the world to dive, but also I have been lucky enough to experience diving in some of the world's greatest hotspots already so each time I dive it's very exciting. I went on a day boat trip and was the only advanced diver on the boat, so I went down with an instructor on my own for a lengthy dives whilst others were doing their intro dives.
The water is magnificent in the Red Sea, literally on par with Coral Bay, Western Australia, both to date are the most amazing waters I have seen. Crystal crystal clear, bright turqoise warms waters...well not actually that warm as I went in January which is low season for them so the water so a cool 21c, which was obviously a lot better than most places but I did get a bit chilly 40 mins into my dive.
I have a slight obsession with turtles when I am diving and kept pestering the instructors to hope we would see one down there, he joked he would give them a call for me to get them lined up but after my first dive I didn't see any. They said they aren't that common at the main dive sites. Anyhow the corals were a gorgeous array of colours, I particularly love the soft corals, I saw lots of different fish and it was very colourful. The snorkelling was also fun, I have an underwater camera which I love messing around with. Got some great shots, ashame it's not good enough to go as deep as my dives are!
We stayed at the Royal Albertros Moderna in Nabq Bay, a 5* Egyptian hotel resort, and boy was it massive! There were about 3 massive swimming pools, a waterpark, private beach and a half a mile long jetty. There is really no need to really leave the resort when you have so much around you, especially as we wanted to relax on this trip. I had been to Cairo before too to see the pyramids and we couldn't be bothered to go haggle on the streets of Naama Bay and be pestered.
Being three young girls the Egytpian staff were of course all over us like a rash, it was funny though and being the polite English girls we were I think they really appreciative of us saying 'Thank You' and smiling as the hotel was mainly full of rude Russians. We got free massages on the beach and cocktails brought round whenever we wanted. One of the guys was explaining how much he gets paid working in the spa, he spoke three languages (the requirement for most of these top resorts) had studied a 4 year University course and additional 2 years for specialist sport qualifications, yet he was now selling the spa packages for just a 5% commission (and our massage was only £23 quid so you can work out he didnt get much from that). He said how the owner started with just a rent-a-car, now has 4 cars and 2 houses, yet the people doing the hard work to make his business so successful are having to work 12-15 hour days for pittance to just survive whilst he gets richer and richer.
It reminds you to appreciate what you have as we constantly moan about stuff here but our lives really aren't that bad. We were also lucky to be kept out of all the dangerous riots going on at the moment, though the government did cut off the Internet and mobile reception when we were there a bit and all our family and friends were worried about us, whilst we were blissfully unaware soaking up the sun.
A week of pure bliss, perfect weather, relaxing, eating and drink...what more can you ask for. We soon hit reality though when we landed at 9pm on the Sunday night and the pilot announced it was just 2c in London!! Good one!
Bring on my next travel adventure...it's going to be a big one again :)
