Well what an experience this was.... I went to go and visit family in Nigeria with my mum and 10 days...I came back with mixed thoughts...I had the most amazing time getting to see my grandparents after many years and also getting to meet so many family members for the first time and it was incredible...but the trip was also a mix of the trip from hell as Nigeria itself its not the place for me...
Though I shouldn't really judge the whole country based on mainly staying in Lagos which is overpopulated, noisy and polluted...it didn't help being caught in a few 2 hour road blocks with little ventilation wishing I could just fly back home! The standard of living is just so far from the UK, of course, it is a third world country but the reality of it hits home when you see how members of your family live. Though saying that because it is all they have ever known, they are quite content.
I got to meet so many gorgeous nieces and nephews of mine, they were amazing. We took them to the waterpark one day, watched them dancing at the houses and brought them all lovely clothes when we first arrived as presents which they were over the moon with.
We travelled up north a few hours to Abeokuta where my amazing grandma lives, she did so much to make her home so welcoming for us and prepared all these nice meals...I struggled a bit because as you probably know I am one of the fussiest people you may ever meet, so the Nigerian food wasn't exactly up my street, but I made do mainly on a diet of eggs, rice and plantan. We did see some nice green scenery and little villages on our way and this looked a lot nicer than the big polluted cities.
Sad to say though I wouldn't hurry back to Nigeria as it is very expensive with the flights and then out there you have to pay for everything as they assume you are a millionaire because you are from the UK, but things are just different. Of course we get more money, but equally my rent in London is 10 times what my aunty is paying for example.
It was definitely an eye-opener experience and not really a 'holiday' but I am glad I got to meet Mum's side of the family and at least at the end of each night Mum and I got to have a laugh together in our 'luxury' guesthouse/hotel (which ended up being like the standard of rooms I have in Thailand! Where we paid £8 a night though so was expecting it, whereas here it was £40). Very interesting place indeed.
I love the time spending with family but in all honesty would have preferred to just completely stay in their houses as anytime we travelled anywhere it was a nightmare!- comments
