Arrived in Lake Naivsha yesterday and I am camping in a campsite that is on the edge of the lake. At 6.30pm in the evening a fence about 10m from the water is electrified and we all wait in anticipation for the Hippo's to come out and feed. Despite two nights of Laura and I going for numerous wanders along the fence with our torches and giggling with excitment of seeing a Hippo we were not to be lucky this time. I guess we can't always have all the luck - but it would have been cool if just one had come out to play.
We hired bikes this morning and 8 of us set off on a 5km ride to Hell's Gate National Park. We entered at the Elsa gate and after paying our park entrance fee we were off. Hell's Gate is one of a few parks that is predominately predator free and therefore you are allowed to ride mountain bikes through the park. We rode for about 20km in the park, doing a loop effectively that started and ended at the same point with a gorge walk in the middle. We arrived at the park at about 9am and got treated with warthogs, giraffes, impala's and zebra all being within about 10m+ of us as we cycled along - very cool way to spend the day.
When we got to the gorge we even found the spot called the Devil's Bedroom which is where a scene in Tomb Raider 2 was filmed. Granted it was just the end of one of the gorges, but the gorge was truly picturesque and rather fun to scramble down and along. We had to have a guide for this bit (about 2 quid each) which considering we didn't know the way was well worth the money.
Cycled back to the front of the park and Rory and I decided to do a rock climb. My decision was made when I arrived at the climbing point and a number of our group were still coming. I did get in trouble sometimes for setting the riding pace too fast, but I was just so excited to be out exercising and it honestly was not that fast! Did a grade 5 rock climb (grade 6 toughest) and was loving the use of arms. It was like an all day gym session today, which after so much truck travelling recently was bliss. I know, not sure who I am anymore, me of all people wanting to exercise :)
My top four days so far have got to be:
Lake Nakuru National Park Game drive
Trekking with the Gorilla's
Biking in Hell's Gate National Park
White Water Rafting on the White Nile.
Impossible to rate these in an order of preference as they were all such different experiences and all equally as enjoyable and amazing at the time.
