Eeek, I have made it to the halfway point of my 16 week tour. Arrived in Nairobi yesterday afternoon after doing a full truck clean at our last campsite. We had to empty the truck and effectively rid it of the dust from the Sudan desert and the northern Kenyan roads. With all hands on deck it was done in an hour, which was not nearly as painful as I feared it might be.
The campsite in Nairobi (Karen's Camp) is in the posh area of Karen, but is still dire. Almost cried when we were told they were not taking washing... clean clothes are now few and far between in my bag and most items are on their 10th wear... but we all smell as bad as each other :) A few of us treated ourselves to a dorm room and bed for the 2 nights, but as I was out on the town till 4.30am last night, not sure how wise that investment was. The highlight of yesterday was finding a beautician/hairdresser and getting my hair cut and coloured - amazing!!! Almost feel like myself again. Ruth does laugh when I straighten my hair and says 'Kelly, this is Africa'. My response stays the same in that 'yes, it is, not the moon, so whilst there is electricity my GHDs will be put to good use'.
Had a fun night with the group at the campsite last night playing drinking Uno and generally being unruly and then headed to a local bar which was interesting. Laura and I decided that given we have not partied that much in Africa, it was time. We hit the town with 3 local Kenyan's and after going to 2 more clubs and then having chicken burgers stumbled into our campsite at 4.30am... today has been a little longer than perhaps necessary, but considering I am going on 4 hours sleep I am looking rather good all things considered.
Today, even with a hangover, was great. We went to an elephant and giraffe sanctuary. We got to touch elephants and take photos whilst they were feeding, all aged between 1 month - 3 years and then we got to feed giraffes. We gave them pellets of grass, maize and molasses and if you put one in between your lips the giraffe even kissed you. It was an umissable photo opporunity (photo to follow when I next see the internet). All in all a great day. Off to the Serengeti tomorrow, so an update on my 3 day adventure in a week or so.
