We arrived in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh during a power cut late on 17th. We were like zombies getting off the bus. Luckily we ran into Geordie and Emma who showed us to our guesthouse, which was along an alley tucked away in a back street. Our room was nice and we had good Internet connection for once.
I really enjoyed Saigon as a city. There were lots of nice restaurants to eat at, Convenient stores, tourist information and bars. There was even malls, which i hadn't seen like the rest of Asia.
Our first day in Saigon we spent at The War Remnants Museum. It was really informative but I found a lot of it really hard to see. Throughout most of the visit I was holding back tears. Looking at the photos of women and their dead babies, children and soldiers. Some of the photos were truly incredible and utterly heartbreaking. The Agent Orange room displayed information about the immediate and current damage the chemical America had spread over Vietnam farmland and jungle. Pictures of deformed children and even the foetus of Siamese twins. Massively humbling and emotional experience.
We went on a day trip to The Cú Chi Tunnels. Another great day learning about how the Vietnamese defended themselves and their complex tunnelling system (at one point there was more than 200km of tunnelling stretched from Saigon to the Cambodian border). The extraordinary gruesome traps laid to kill Americans. We went through some example tunnels (westernised so we would fit). It was claustrophobic and sweaty. We were able to pay 350,000 dong (10 bullets) to shoot an AK47. Such a powerful and noisy machine it was an exciting experience. The guns are attached to a wooden plank and a guide loads the gun so you can't go Rambo on everyone.
We spent the afternoons, evenings walking around the markets (Ben Thanth Market) and ticking off the main city sights, Notre Damn Cathedral, Post Office and Reunification Palace. We ate some great meals in a mixture of places. There was an ABC bakery not far from the guesthouse, which we all regularly visited. Fanny's ice cream (i know big lols) was delicious especially their range of gelato.
Our last night we went for dinner with Amel and Katie (who had just arrived in Saigon), and Claudia and went to the top of the Sheraton Hotel for one expensive cocktail and see the view over Saigon/Ho Chi Minh. Great views and great way to end our Vietnam trip.
Vietnam was a great experience. We had lots of fun and met loads of great people. We had lots of ups and a couple of downs (only because of bus cons and being shouted at). We learnt a lot and ate lots! Goodbye Vietnam!
