3 days in Singapore roundup
Singapore is a lovely clean safe city! 3 cultures work together to create a united Singapore; Chinese, Malaysian and Indian.
We stayed in Little India which was a great location to get around the city. We got the MRT and walked everywhere. The transport was simple and clean. We were based between Lavender and Farrell MRT stations.
On arrival at singapore I managed to slip on the shiny floors and sprain my ankle and it bloody hurt! This slightly hindered the trip but I managed to walk from place to place. We decided to sleep as soon as we got to Singapore so were refreshed for a day of exploring.
The hostel owners were lovely and provided us with a map and told us all the tourist locations. I had gained several bites in the night and the aircon was so cold I didn't have the best sleep. We walked through Little India and got the MRT to Chinatown (a must in all cities we go to) It was busy and had lots of food stalls and in the touristy area there were lots of souvenir shops! Vic had ordered us to have chilli crab while in Singapore so we picked our fresh crab a smaller of the bunch. It wasn't exactly the backpacker lunch we had hoped for but it was delicious. The chilli sauce was very tasty and the crab came with fried buns which were great for mopping up the sauce and went brilliantly with our cold tiger beer.
We saw the Merlion (half fish half lion) an iconic symbol of Singapore and looked across the water at the impressive Marina Bay Sands, which looks like 3 tall sky scrapers and a boat that lies across the top.
The weather looked like it was going to turn and pour in no time so we walked along the boat quay and watched the rain fall hard with a happy hour priced Singapore Sling.
Orchard Road was our next stop and where we would be meeting Jean & Dax (Vics cousin and wife). We looked around the huge malls which had christmas decorations up all ready. The malls were impressive and a perfect place to Christmas shop.
Jean and Dax picked us up and we made our way to Marina Bay Sands. The traffic was mad busy on a Friday night but we learnt lots; everyone who drives also has to pay a fee for the car to be allowed to be on the road the equivalent of £45,000. Singaporeans have to pay $100 to go to the casino but it's free for foreigners. Singaporeans learn English as their first language and go to separate classes for their Indian or Chinese lessons.
Dinner in the food court of MBS was incredible! Jean & Dax sat us down and then went away coming back with different dishes until the table was rammed with 12 dishes of goodness!
1. Laksa
2. Fried hokkein noodles
3. Char Kway teow
4. Barbeque stingray
5. Fried sambal clams
6. Sambal squid
7. Indian curry with naan
8. Chicken rice
9. Fried carrot cake
10. Prawn dumplings & Siew Mai
11. Ice Kachang
12. Bubble tea
Everything was delicious I wish we could of finished it all. Dishes 1, 8, 9 & 10 were my favourite. Had such a great time the bubble tea at the end was also fun.
The next day we were both feeling the tiredness of travelling; I was irritated by my blistered bites and sprained ankle and Neil was still getting over the flu. We had an early lunch at the nearby mall. A great deal for $10 i got a bento box and Neil had a Katsu Curry, miso soup and fresh juice. We walked off lunch and made the effort to go to Harbour Front. We were going to go to Sentosa but it was a Saturday and their were kids everywhere. In the end we window shopped and went to see James Bond Skyfall. The cinema was freezing from the aircon but the film was pretty damn good! Lots of original bond references.
We had dinner at MBS food court again (if it ain't broke don't fix it philosophy); I had a seafood ramen and we shared hot and sour pork dumplings. So good, fast and fresh I got to watch the guy make my noodles.
The free light/water show at MBS was just beautiful. It was the perfect night for it. The show had lights, lasers, water, smoke, bubbles and fire what more could you want.
Bugis Street market was about a 15-20 minute walk from our hostel so we explored the area made popular by the youth of Singapore. We weaved in and out of the stalls taking in the party atmosphere. Remixed tunes blasting out of each stall.
Singapore is a vibrant city and a foodies heaven. What we were going to eat was the highlight of our day. It isn't a cheap city but you can find some bargains. Worth another visit with more money. Thanks again to Vic for your advise and introducing us to Jean & Dax who treated us to the greatest meal.
