This morning we woke up a bit earlier because it was a travel day and we still wanted to enjoy breakfast with views of the Acropolis! We took the metro back to the airport where our rental car and rental agent were waiting for us. We filled out the paper work and we were on our way to Delphi! Kevin did a great job navigating the crazy Greek drivers. They like to come up behind you super-fast and then make you guess which side they are going to pass you on…no matter what is on the other side! They are fearless!
After a couple of hours of driving we rose out of the flat/hilly landscape and soared into the mountains where we arrived at Dephi. This is where the Temple of Apollo was created. The ruins were massive both in structure and how far out they spread. One of the most impressive things was a sphinx that was huge and previously sat on a column that was 36+ feet off the ground! How people got these huge rocks, statues and sculptures up to these heights without the modern tools we have today will always baffle me!
We had wonderful weather and we were able to sit out on our balcony with a fantastic view and a deck of cards so I could beat Kevin at cribbage! We walked across the street to eat dinner and watch the sunset over the mountains in the distance. For a time we had the restaurant to ourselves, but then a larger tour came into the restaurant and it was just in time for us to get our check! Kevin had a traditional Greek dish, Mousakka, made with veggies and minced meat layered in a pot with béchamel and tomato sauce. It was delicious. I had a mushroom truffle risotto that was also very tasty. As always there was a delicious free dessert that left us wanting more!
We are happy to not have a rushed timetable tomorrow morning so we can relax and eat our breakfast in peace. Then on to Meteora!
