S: So Vietnam here we come!! All sorted for a night bus, and should arrive in Saigon (pre war name) at 7am. Sometimes you forget you're in Asia, first of all, our pick up should have been 11.30pm, and we weren't picked up until 2.30am. Then we had to wait for another hour to fill the bus but finally we were on our way and the bus breaks down. Let's just say it was a long journey. But on the positive side we arrived in one piece. Even though we were tired from the journey we didn't want to waste the rest of the day. We went to the War Remnants Museum, it was truly an eye opener. The war was terrible between the north and south. The Americans joined the South Vietnamese Government to help against the communists (North) and used Agent Orange (Dioxin) and Napalm in chemical warfare. Yes the war is over but the devastating effects are still being felt today.
J: We walked about the town for a bit just taking in the hustle & bustle of so many motorbikes! We saw a replica of the Notre-Dame church which was weird in Vietnam but turned out a lot of the city had the same designer as in France. We also headed to the markets and kept our haggling skills up, I got some new sunglasses and made the guy angry as I wouldn't move on my offer lol. We also found some street food with this lovely old lady and she sat next to Sam fanning her to try and cool her down.
S: We visited the Cu Chi tunnels built by the VietKong in the war. It's amazing to look at how small the tunnels are, and how they lived in them for years to combat the Americans. The tunnels ran for miles and the Vietnamese were very good at setting traps that left soldiers maimed or killed. Our guide was a very anti American, as he was smiling and very pleased at how many Americans got killed after they "interfered" in his war. We were allowed to crawl through a tunnel that had been made bigger for westerners. That was small enough as you had to shuffle in a crouched position.
J: After that tunnel you could choose to do an original tunnel for 50 meters, it was about 30% smaller than the first... I went for it and it was tight! Hands and knees crawling and no lights along the way, it was completely pitch black and I kept hitting my head as the roof kept getting lower.
Then our guide tells us that we can have a go at using some of the weapons...... As you do we took the opportunity to fire a mag of a M16. I was like a kid in a sweet shop, shooting the rounds down at the target gave me a huge buzz! Sam even had a few shots and made me laugh as she closed her eyes as the gun fired so standing by the target was probably safe. But we both got an adrenaline rush for the rest of the day. But to my surprise while we were there I heard "White James" being shouted, and even after traveling through different counties we met up with Black James again and had a laugh with him again.
S: It was our last night there, so we decided to hit the tourist street!! It was crazy, and full of tourists but a great place to meet new people. We grabbed a couple of beers and sat on plastic chairs in the street, chatting to new people.
