Another early morning wake up call to back up and leave Puno this morning. We caught a 7:30am bus that brought us across the Bolivian border (surprisingly easy), and landed us in Copacabana, Bolivia around 1130am. We had an hour stop over here for lunch - we had packed sandwiches so we had a picnic on the beach of Lake Titicaca. Copacabana maybe wasn't exactly what we were expecting, but the lake was beautiful.
Around 1pm we got on another bus towards La Paz. It was a gorgeous ride on a sunny day. About an hour after we left Copacabana, our bus stopped in a small town, we thought maybe for a bathroom break? But we had to get off the bus to be ferried across the lake, our bus on an old, rundown barge, and us on a passenger boat! It was such a gorgeous little town on the lake, we just wanted to stay and camp there for a few days!
The rest of the ride to La Paz was fairly uneventful, just a lot of winding mountain roads, but as we were arriving in La Paz, the road winds in around a mountain above the city and the entire HUGE city (1.2 million people) is laid out in the valley below. Absolutely gorgeous!
We arrived at the bus station and bought our tickets for tomorrow (on to Cochabamba), and grabbed a taxi to the hostel Mark had picked out - Adventure Brew. A hostel with it's own microbrewery!!!! We settled in here nicely - lots of other travelers and a free pancake breakfast. And a great atmosphere. We decided to just stick in the hostel since it was getting dark and we didn't really know the area in La Paz. We had a great dinner here and a free beer!
We ended up hanging out in the dinner/pub area until after midnight - we made friends with a traveler from Columbia (who is going to see the Columbian national team play Bolivia in LaPaz tomorrow - Mark is so jealous!), had a few rounds of drinks, and caught the Lion's Monday night football game!!! 5 and 0!!!!!!!!!!
It was a great day and tomorrow we move on again! Out of the city and into the valley!
