Yeeeeee Haaaaaa cowboy. So we made it all the way back north into Wyoming and into REAL America.Nothing but wild animals, cowboys and mountains. We started off with a couple of days hiking and camping in Grand Teton National Park with its granite peaks and massive lakes.Having not seen any bears when we were in Yosemite, surely this was going to be our moment? But you see there's a strange thing about seeing bears - you spend so much time scanning the area in the hope of capturing some great pics whilst at the same time praying that you don't bump into a grizzly and her young cubs whilst out on a trail in the middle of nowhere. You hear so many scare stories of what to do or what not to do, whether to make noise or stay silent, whether to run or stand still - yeah right you're going to have the ability to keep quiet and play dead if it goes for you - and how to protect your camp from an ambush - all food and toiletries locked in a bear box and nothing with a scent in the tent - I was nervous that a bear might be enticed by the smell emanating from Ant's socks…then again maybe not.The result was no bears spotted this time but we did see elk, deer and coyotes.
Then it was onto Yellowstone National Park - the oldest of the US parks and home to Old Faithful Geyser, bubbling mud and crazy coloured pools.Again no bears but we did see herds of huge bison, some of whom decided to start crossing the road just as we were driving past.Very cool. From there we made it over the mountains to the little town of Cody famous for Buffalo Bill (no not the one from 'Silence of the Lambs' but the one who started up the 'Wild West Show') and a nightly rodeo!Loved the passion they put into it with their hands on their hearts as a prayer was said at the start followed by a local girl singing the 'Stars and Stripes'.The strength of these crazy people who ride on the back of bucking bulls and who race horses around barrels! There were people of all ages doing it - even a cute little cowgirl aged 4!
We finished our time up in Wyoming with an amazing drive over the Big Horn Mountains ending up at Devils Tower National Monument - a bizarre rock formation made famous by 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'.Possibly the best camping spot ever and whilst we'd had no encounters with bears nor aliens, Wyoming will definitely go down as our favourite State.
