After all that fun and games it was time for a bit of culture with the mother of all Mayan ruins in Tikal. A very early start to be there for sunrise and a drive into the depths of the jungle - very similar to the Angkors in Cambodia.
We pretty much had the complex to ourselves so we spent hours exploring the various temples and plazas spotting monkeys, toucans, raccoons and tarantulas along the way. We´re still none the wiser as to what any of the temples and buildings were meant for but that´s part of the fun isn´t it?
The main temples are so steep that you can no longer climb up the steps themselves (as two unfortunate tourists who are no longer with us discovered) but instead up somewhat dubious ladders attached to the sides (the Mayans must have had such small feet as well as the steps are tiny!). Hmm health and safety standards definitely don´t exist in Guatemala.
