Well we´ve had an interesting time in the north of the country... It started off well cruising down the Rio Dulce on our way out to the Caribbean sea... Lots of bird spotting (sadly for Ashley only wildlife, not women) and massive waterside pads, one with 18 (yes 18!) yachts, boats and jetskis moored up outside - evidently lots of gringoes have made a lot of money in the area - something to do with it being on a drug trafficking route perhaps?
We spent some time trying to stay afloat in makeshift wooden canoes and checked out a scorching hot waterfall with its own mini natural sauna. All that hot water must have got my insides going however as I didn´t feel so good after that and hmmm I only went from bad to worse (personally I blame Ashley for bringing some weird Canadian bug over).Oh dear, I was not feeling well but the only method of transport out of there was by boat driven by a crazy rasta man…
Somehow we made it to our destination of Livingston without me embarrassing myself and checked into our hostel Casa Iguana.Note to others - if you ever travel here, do not stay here if not feeling well.Actually do not stay here full stop. It´s run by a crazy bunch of whities who employ frat-boy Americans to essentially get everyone wasted on all manner of illegal substances and blast out music until the morning. Now I´m no grandma and like a bit of Tiesto now and then but when the wooden shacks they call rooms open out onto the bar - well let´s just say it was like trying to sleep in the middle of a nightclub. With Americans swearing about how wasted they are all night. And then when the roosters started their 5am call from under our room - yes they´re raised about a metre off the ground - it was like being in a nightclub with the roosters acting as the cleaning staff on the morning shift. So let´s just say I still wasn´t feeling well the next day.
With me holed up in the rooster-infested nightclub, Ant and Ash decided to explore the Caribbean town of Livingston - a place where the Garifuna people live.Get this - back in the day, the African slaves on the British Caribbean island of St Vincent rebelled and decided they didn´t want to be slaves anymore.Instead of convincing them otherwise, the Brits decided to dump them on the Honduran island of Roatan from where they worked out how to get to the mainland and spread up the Central American coast. And Livingston is a town made up of their descendants whose first language is Caribbean sounding English with a bit of Spanish thrown in on top.Impossible to understand.Ash managed to make his photos of the only bit of clean beach look vaguely nice but after a second night in the rooster-infested nightclub, we decided to get the hell out of there.
