Time to cruise down the Californian coast on Highway 1.First up was beach volleyball, rickety wooden rollercoasters and noisy sea lions in Santa Cruz.Next was Monterey Bay with the most amazing aquarium complete with kelp forests, slimy rays and evil jellyfish. As we parked Frank up outside, we noticed that all the other cars surrounding him looked a bit swank. Now this wasn't that unusual - we love the Frankster but he's not exactly a looker - but there was something a bit more 'celebrity' about the cars in the area.Turns out the US Open was in town at the home of golf, Pebble Beach. Now I'm not the biggest fan of golf (as PlanPer will know) but I'm never one to pass up on a bit of live sport and well, when in Rome and all that. Not to be deterred by the locals telling us it was all sold out, we made our way over to the entrance bright and early on the opening day of the tournament and Ant put on his best dodgy-east-end-tout voice - "Anyone got any spare tickets?Tickets?Tickets?Anyone selling any tickets?".Ten minutes of shirky dealings later and we were in.Wow what a course.Right on the rugged coastline, seals basking on the rocks and bright sunshine all day.Very amusing to see Tiger 'Cheat-ah' Woods being followed by an entourage of police, bodyguards, cameramen and press while everyone else went about their game pretty much solo.Even more amusing was overhearing another spectator saying at the 7th hole, "I always make par, if not birdie, on this hole… on Tiger Woods for the Playstation 3".Sadly cameras were banned so no pics of this day out.
We were able to be snap happy as we made our way south along the Big Sur coast - stunning ocean vistas for miles and miles and more ma-hu-ssive, farting, burping elephant seals.Stopped in Morro Bay for our new favourite - French Dip sandwiches, in Santa Barbara for some med-style relaxing and in San Luis Obispo to stare down an alley decorated with chewing gum.Highly cultural this America trip.
