So much to write about. I think last time we were in Ko Phangan just before the full moon party. I'll try and remember everything we've done since!
So Full Moon party was ace. We managed to stay up until sunrise, which looked doubtful at about 4oclock but we did (sunrise about 6-6.30). Left Ko Phangnan a couple of days after the party on the night boat. This was a little boat with loads of matresses all pushed together with way too many people. We ended up sharing a mattress pretty much, not just with each other but with the two lads either side who gradually through the night ended up more on ours than on their own, was very cosy! Started off really rough but settled down. Arrived on the mainland at 5 in the morning and got a minibus at about 7 to take us to Hat Rin. The seat infront of Toyah was broken and when the lad told the driver he waved his hand and siad 'ah accident!.' Was quite funny at the time until you realise the reason it is broken was because there was an accident and his driving didn't make you any more reassured. Anyway got toHat Yai and once again had no idea what was happening just told to seat down. We ended up on this local mini bus to take us to the port to get a ferry across from Thailand to Malaysia. Had people waving at us just because we were white. We also had our photo taken the other day by some malay boys and today we ended up getting filmed by this English language group who had to approach English speaking people and have a general conversation. Feel like celebrities! Also got approached by a guy the other day who we thought was from Bangladesh, who had worked in Dubai and gone to England in the hope he would be allowed to work but he was deported. He now works in Malaysia but his work permit costs double the amount he gets paid. He wanted our advise on getting into England and then starting talking about getting married so we made a quick exit! Malaysian people in general though are so friendly, everone just says hello to you all the time. In Thailand they were nice but they always wanted your money whereas here they are just friendly. Anyway complete tangent there from our trip to Malaysia. We made it to the ferry port and after a two hour wait and a freezing boat ride we were in Malaysia in a place called Langkawi. We stayed in our first dorm which was fine but unbelievably hot. Langkawi was gorgeous. First day we went for a big long wander along lots of beaches until we found the one where all the rich people come on holiday and pay loads (we paid about 2.70 a night). We also stumbled across this random visitor centre surrounded by rice fields and the man who worked there ended up giving us a big tour for free which was really nice. He also taught us to play a traditional Malay game with marbles. 2nd day - we went up a mountain in a cable car which doesn't sound that interesting but was really good. Was there for about 2hours at the top followed by another wander until we found a deserted beach and a marina. 3rd day we went on an island hopping thing, was good.
Next we were heading to Georgetown. Another traumatic trip unravelled itself. The owner at the hostel said he would get us tickets and transport sorted. He got the transport but not the tickets and we ended up at the port but there were no tickets left for that day. We ended up getting a boat to the mainland (again didn't really know what was going off) and then a two hour taxi to Georgetown. But we got there in the end so all was good. Our accomodation was the cheapest yet at about 1.80 a night. We even had a little mouse to share it with! Really enjoyed Georgetown. We pretty much got a map and went off until we came across something interesting. Best thing was a lighthouse that was mentioned in any of the tour books or leaflets. You could climb to top and see pretty much all of Georgetown. We nearly got killed near it though by a falling branch. We were just stood there and half a tree just landed at our feet. It wasn't until we saw everone laughing around us that we realised how fatal it could of been! Georgetown also had an English pub that sold draft ale. Never thought I would miss the smell of a british pub but it smelt amazing. We also used public buses for the first time since we've been away. We walked into the bus station looking lost so a bus driver lead us to the bus we had to be on and told us when to get off.
Just spent two days in Georgetown and then we went to the Cameron Highlands, which is where we are now. Much cooler up here which is nice. The journey was great here too. At no point did we not know what was happening. So far we have been on a trek through the jungle. it was so fun but so hard. Thank god for Toyah's strong arms because I was too weak to pull myself up the rope. There was a massive storm the night before too so was so muddy, looked such a state by the time we had finished. We made it to the top though and then walking for about 10km before a local bus pulled up on the side of the road and took us back to our town. hurting so much today though so we just had a gentle 5km walk, went to a butterfly farm and picked some strawberries and ate them in the park.
That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Just need to mention Toyah's clumsiness since we got to malaysia. She keeps tripping up over everything. At first she blamed her sandals, then her flip flops and then her trainers. She keeps cutting her toes and they keep bleeding. It's like A and E in our room everynight with her strapping her toes up. Bless. We try and write a bit sooner next time. xxxxxxxxxxxxx
