Katie's Adventures
I've been in Cairns for over a week now and am ready to leave! Tomorrow, Liam, Anna and myself are driving up to Cape Tribulation for a few days. Liam and Anna bought a VW Combi last week and are living in it and driving it along the East Coast so we're giving it a test drive this week. Most days we have sat by the Lagoon chilling out, or cooking on the barbeques at the Lagoon or my hostel in the evenings. The food out here is brilliant and fairly cheap - eating a lot of fresh Salmon and kangaroo! Last Wednesday Anna, Kyle and I went to the Cairns Tropical Zoo. It was brilliant, loads to see. They had some huge Crocs, many that had been caught in the Queensland area because they are 'problems'. I even held a baby croc (which was actually quite big!) and he felt lovely! I held a koala too and they are gorgeous, really fluffy and cling onto you for dear life. There's also a photo of my next to a Wombat, can't get too close as they bite, but are really cute. Friday we went to the Great Barrier Reef on a boat trip. My highlight of the day was by far seeing a Humpback Whale swimming around in the ocean, it was amazing. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera to hand!! We stopped at two reefs and Anna and Liam were diving and I opted just for snorkelling. I was quite nervous but once I got in the water I was fine, not scared at all. I wore a wetsuite as it got quite cold and they help you float better. I saw a few fish, but nothing exciting. We had a lovely lunch and then headed to another reef for more snorkelling and diving. There's a fish that hangs around the reef called Wally and he's a Napoleon something, and the guys on the boat feed him and he's huge! Unforunately I didn't see him when I snorkelled. The wind had picked up at this point and the sea was quite choppy so I didn't stay in as long. The trip back was so rough I really thought I was going to die and had to take some sea sickness tablets! But the main man on board provided entertaintment all the way back so took you're mind off of the huge waves!
That night the hostel I am staying at was doing a free bus to a bungy party. It was a proper double decker with open top and we sat up there - it was soooo cold and windy! The place we went to was up in the hills and was lovely, we sat there drinking Vodka and Redbull for about 2 pounds watching people Bungy Jumping, a few bottled out! I was quite tempted but not pissed enough to do it! We left there at 12.30 and came back to the hostel with Patrick and Martyn who we'd met at the party. Drank red wine until we were too sleepy and went to bed. Last night we ended up in this bar that has a Crocodile head on the end, got quite pissed. Had the most amazing fish and chips there too!!
Tomorrow we're leaving for Cape Tribulation for a few days, think we are camping! I'm going to check it out first and if I don't like the look of it, am booking into a hostel! Hoping to also stop at Port Douglas on the way back to Cairns. Got to be back by the 15th August to start my Intrepid Tour. Have also changed my flights home and am now due back on the 7th November and not the 23rd. Am missing out Hawaii as it's meant to be quite expensive and commercial, not that bothered about the place anyway.
