Spanish Adventures
Fátima told us that she thought Toledo was the most beautiful city in Spain, and while I haven't visited many Spanish cities I can see why she said that. The city is surrounded by a river and has a ton of windy cobblestone streets (that are really easy to get lost in).
After taking a bus around the outside of the city we did a walking tour where we stopped at the cathedral. It was absolutely massive. There were tons of different mini chapels that we were told nobility used to own and use privately. There was also a gallery with art mostly by El Greco, a famous artist. The cathedral exhibited the Gothic style architecture with the high pointed arches and beautiful and intricate stained glass windows.
After visiting the cathedral we walked around the city a little and all the rest of the girls and I had to stop ourselves from walking into every store and buying tons of stuff (January is the month of sales). Then we had lunch in a little restaurant. Since we're a big group they give us a modified menu but it was all in Spanish and nobody had any idea what it said. By the time I ordered I still only had a partially formed idea of what I was going to be getting. Turns out I had a baked apple stuffed with ham and mushrooms (sounds weird but it was really really really good) and some type of beef stew (also good but not as good as the apple). My stomach needs to start getting used to having a huge meal in the middle of the day though.
After lunch we had an hour of free time. Some people were headed to an exhibit on torture devices but I wasn't sure that was something my full stomach would really appreciate......In the end me and some of the other girls meandered our way back to where we would be meeting. Mostly we were searching for a bathroom which we eventually found.
After four hours on the bus we arrived in Granada where I met my host mom! She brought her son (who lives with her) to help my roommate and I with our luggage. I had thought we would be taking a taxi, but as it turns out we ended up lugging our stuff through the (complicated) streets of Granada and up two flights of stairs. At that point I was really wishing I packed lighter.
My room is super cute with TONS of closet space (which means plenty of room for more clothes!) I have my own little balcony and a desk and everything. It is a little chilly in the rooms though, so I'm glad you convinced me to buy those pajama pants Mom. Tomorrow we're spending the day with our host families and touring the city a bit.
It feels amazing to finally be here, unpacked and settled in. I can't wait to get to know the city over my time here!
