Since our plan of white water rafting this morning had to cancelled due to too much rain we had a welcome lie in. Nursing the first of my mosquito bites, despite wearing loads of repellent and a repelling patch, I heading downstairs to meet Carmen for breakfast.
Every Sunday there is a market down Jalan Gaya so we headed down to see what is on sale. The atmosphere was great, with locals and tourists a like bartering and trading clothes, gifts and food. As we passed City Hall we were met by the sight of hundreds of bikers in KK for the Big Bike Festival with participants from everywhere from Hong Kong to Singapore. With the temperature soaring as the sun came out we stuck to the shade and found a little local place to have lunch. When we asked for the bill we were met by 3 locals with their purses, looking confused we were told the drinks were sold by one 'manager' and each of our meals by a different 'manager' and they all part owned the shop floor together. Bemused we paid up and headed off.
Carmen needed to change some money so we went in search of the shopping centre near City Hall, welcomed by the air conditioning we got lost among the shops selling mobile phone cases and ipods as they all look the same. I found some bandannas of every colour possible at 75p each (so I got 4) and Carmen got some notebooks for her friends back home.
We suffered the heat once more and decided to stop off and get an ice-cream before heading back to the hostel.
We met Richard for dinner at 6 along with Brad, who Carmen had met before I arrived, who had just arrived back in KK today after climbing Mount Kinabalu in the torrential rain. Dead set on Indian for tonight's meal we scoured the city for a curry house where we could vaguely understand the menu. After a couple of failed attempted we found a place that were happy to serve several dishes between the four of us as well as some side dishes and freshly squeezed apple juice! Rather full we felt it appropriate to stop off at the Rainforest Bar on the way home tempted by 3 beers for 12MR (£2.50). I settled down with a Pina Colda as the live music got warmed up. After 3 rounds or so we hit the pool table (playing by Canadian rules) before staggering home.
