Today we travel from Ouarzazate to Taroudant driving through the Anti-Atlas and stopping at several places along the way.
Morocco's own special home of film, Ouarzazate lies in a valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Apart from its desert-like setting and prettily designed architectural layout, it would seem this town has very little to offer. A scenic day trip to the surrounding areas will soon have you entertained as you visit ruins of ancient Kasbahs, date palmeries, and remote villages. Several well-known movies have either been filmed here in their entirety or have had their desert scenes shot here. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars, and The Gladiator all have the Ouarzazate desert in common.
Enjoy a visit to the famous kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most fascinating kasbahs of Morocco. Aït Benhaddou has featured as the time-worn backdrop of on-screen epics including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones, and it's easy to see why. Clay towers and earthen buildings fit together to form an enormous sand castle, decorated by swathes of date palms and olive groves. it's a fortified town with several kasbahs made of an adobe mixture (sand, clay, water, and, sometimes, organic material such as straw or manure). Once this mixture is molded it's left to dry in the sun. This is a very special way of building which uses local materials. Because it's made from the soil, the structure itself appears to emerge from the landscape.
Taznakht, is a small town known for weaving Berber carpet. well-worked sheep wool, bright colours, and well-organized geometric patterns. The abstract and geometric language of the Berber carpet comes from the origins of the body, the shape, and the functions of the human sexual organs.
Taliouine, the capital of Saffron. The city itself is small - just under 6,000 people - but produces more saffron than any other place in Africa. This small town produces approximately 7,000 pounds of the spice each year. Every November, a festival is held at harvest time and people from around the world come to watch and celebrate. Historically, Taliouine was the seat of the powerful Glaoui clan, who constructed an imposing kasbah from where they ruled over the southern Souss region for generations.
