Kate & Rob's Adventure
Hello all
Well we're back in Sydney, it's good to be back, the weather is nicer and we feel confident about navigating ourselves around now. We're staying in the same hotel we were when we came the first time and everything with flights and things went fine to get here.
We have got pretty good at making the most of our time and although we only arrived in the afternoon we headed out to the SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground) to watch an AFL (Australian Football League) game. We were brought up to speed with the rules by Steve and his family and were confident we could understand it all. It's a game invented for Cricketers during off season and involves 18 players running around a large oval chasing a small American Football size ball. It is a good physical game and unlike any other game I have watched or played. We had a great time drinking beer and eating pies (just like the locals) and we even understood what was going on! I am not too sure whether it will replace the game we know and love but it is defiantly a good spectator sport and something we won't forget.
Sunday was a walking extravaganza, we walked all the way down town and over the bridge, the weather was gorgeous so we got some really nice photos of the opera house and the bridge. We also went to Darling Harbor, which is known for its restaurants and its nightlife, it is also home to the Aquarium and several museums. We took a short break to go to the IMAX and then headed back to the hotel to rest our aching feet.
Today is ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corp) day it is like their remembrance day and so there are parades through the streets and a service and the main memorial. The main event is carried out in Turkey at the Gallipoli peninsula and live footage of this was on the TV since the early hours. We went downtown to watch the parades and then went to the short service held at the memorial. The streets are lined with service men and lots were wearing their medals. When the events were over it was off to the Pub where I think they will remain for the rest of the day. It was interesting to be in a different country for this kind of remembrance but it was still moving and with over 300,000 people in the streets it was a great spectacle.
Tomorrow we are going to explore the Blue Mountains just outside of Sydney so we will be sure to take lots of photos and keep you all up to speed with what the area has to offer.
Thinking of you all, lots of love
ROB and KATE
