Up nice and early after a decent nights sleep and jumped in a taxi to the opera house to be picked up for the trip as I am really bad at finding my way round the streets here! Had a really nice guide called Ana. Drove about 90 minutes to the Mekong River and then got on a long boat to Unicorn Island which is meant to be a lucky place! Visited a local family who live in the island and they gave us fresh tropical fruit and green tea and sang traditional Vietnamese songs for us. Got to look in their houses which are surprisingly nice, this place is not what I was expecting at all, have been really blown away by it!!
Went to a bee farm next and tried fresh honey straight from the hive as well as honey tea and honey wine. Back on the boat to another island to visit a coconut candy factory- the worst possible place for me to visit! Had to put Carmex on my nose so I couldn't smell it but it was ok!! Next stop was a tuktuk ride through the trees to a tiny little restaurant for lunch, had freshly caught and cooked fish made into spring rolls at the table in front of us! Plus loads more food but again it's just too hot to eat much! After lunch, got in a kayak and were paddled down the little rivers that meet the main one, was really peaceful again but only had like 10 minutes on it, would have liked longer! Back on the boat and then back to the city, managed to sleep the whole journey! Getting good at sleeping in random places!!
Had a shower and then attempted to go and meet Laura, again got totally lost and ended up on the total wrong side to where I should be! A ten minute walk took me more like 45 minutes and it was SO hot!! It is really sticky and oppressive heat, not nice!
Eventually found her hostel and then we walked (Laura directing) to the tallest building in Saigon, the Bitexco Financial Tower. Got in a lift to the 52nd floor to their sky bar and sat drinking possibly the most expensive Long Island ice teas in Saigon looking out over the whole city! Views were incredible!!
Headed back into town to 'Backpacker Alley' and went to a few bars! Not quite Bang La road yet but it was good! We're just about to call it a reasonably early night when we got chatting to some people and decided to organise our own bar crawl! Ended up being about 15 of us, went to a club called Donkey in the end, lots of cocktails, crazy dancing and table football!! Another excellent night out!!
