The Lakes Entrance is a really picturesque town situated on the gentle waters of Cunninghame Arm, backed by sand dunes. We were only here for a fly by visit to settle our curiosity, but managed to get some great views from the lookouts looking over the Lakes Entrance and got a jist of what the surrounding area was like. Later we crossed the footbridge of the Cunningham Arm inlet to Ninety Mile beach. To be honest the beach was, well, a beach - and a long one at that. It was nice to see, and again settled our curiosity - but you couldnt see the beach for ninety miles as it isnt a perfectly straight coastline.. so unless you are going for a swim (the sea was actually quite rough), then there wasnt much for us to do here. Although after writing some post cards we did have a sneaky shower in the public showers (and get some funny looks - shampooing in outdoor showers isnt a good look!!) haha.
That afternoon we were headed for the Alpine National Park to head on into Kosciuszko National Park to climb Australias Highest Peak. We thaught it would be quicker to pass through the Alpine National Park along an unsealed road instead of going ll the way round the National Park to get to Mt Kosciuszco.. my god we were wrong!! haha. The Alpine National Park links the high country areas of Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital territory. Alot of the park is largely wilderness and not maintained, so very rugged. Not only were the tracks around the park ridiculously bumpy, they were really windy too - we didnt think the car would take it.. especially when the car was leaking fluid!! We all panicked as we were in the middle of knowwhere and weren't even supposed to be on unsealed tracks! However we did get to see some great views of the Australian Alps and the snowy River running through the park. The roads had some steep cliff drop offs, which was a little nerve wracking.. especially when we were accompanied by 2 wild horses on these roads also, not to mention several kangeroo's!! What a nightmare! It was then when we realised we needed to stop and camp up for the night as it was getting a little too dangerous! We managaed to get the camper to Jindabyne - a cute little ski resort type town, which s quite quiet this time of year.It is the main town we were situating ourselves to climb Mt Kosciuszko. We took it to the local garage and it turned out that the van just needed a new radiator cap, as the seal had broken, which is why it was leaking. Phew, thank god for that!!
