Mount Gambier was a really beautiful place, famous for its deep bright Blue crater Lake in the extinct volcano the town is based around - which mysteriosuly changes to vivid cobolt blue from November each year. We took the 3.6 kilometre walking path around the blue lake stopping at various lookouts, which was beautiful. Caves have been formed under and around the city through dissolution of the limestone. We visited a really good example of this, where the cave had collapsed called Umpherson Sinkhole. This was a popular nighttime attraction in which you get to handfeed the local Possums - which now call the sinkhole their home, cute. The sinkhole garden was pretty beautiful, flowers and greenery everywhere.. The possums were really friendly, and with a piece of chopped up apple in our hands they were quick to take it off you, or to climb up your arm for it - as I witnessed!! I was a little freaked out at times thinking they were going to bite me. There were alot more than we expected sharing the area with lots of little mice, and they were so tame!! Some climbed up Chris's and James legs and started nibbling at their shoes, they are seen as a huge pest in Australia and New Zealand but we just found them adorable! In close proximity to Mt Gambier there are also some other smaller craters, which we climbed to the top off up to the Centenary tower also offering some great views. It was after this walk that we decided a barbeque down in the valley between the craters was the way forward and got the burgers on the go, it was a great day for it as well!!
