After Milford Sound we drove south to Invercargill which was pretty run down and not very interesting. We didn't stick around and drove straight on to Dunedin. We thought we'd take the Southern Scenic Route to Dunedin instead of cutting accross and taking the slightly shorter route, but it really wasn't worth it! It wasn't very scenic and quite boring, maybe it was because we had just come from the fiordland?
We had been told by a nice lady that Dunedin was 'a little Edinburugh'...don't know what Edinburugh she had been to, but other than a nice church and an old building which was a civic hall, it was nothing like it! All the same, the town was nice and the Cadbury's chocolate factory nicer! We had a tour around the factory which was fairly amusing because we had to wear silly hairnets and Neil even had to wear a snude! At the end of the tour there was a gigantic chocolate fountain and we got heaps of free chocolate! Unfortunately for us, our chocolate was STOLEN (!) from the fridge at the campsite! If your reading this and you have it then shame on you and i hope it made you nice and plump!
The next day we took a drive to the Otago Penninsula which is only 15 minutes from the city center. The penninsula was very pretty but also very hilly for poor Ollie! We drove to a beach called Seal Point where we were hoping to see some penguins. We had arrived at the wrong time as the penguins only come to shore early evening but we had a walk anyway. The beach was pretty long and when we got to the end my eye caught something moving behind a log. At first i thought it was seaweed flapping or something but then realised it was a sea lion or a very large seal, on it's back waving it's flippers! Apparently the beach sees loads of sea lions so i'd like to think it was one!
We drove the route around the penninsula which was really nice before returning to Dunedin.
