Karen's Travels
Hello everyone
On the move again. Arrived in Krabi last night after nearly 12 hours travelling by boat and coach. Staying in a small, friendly guesthouse just for two nights and then on the move again. Went to Wat Tham Seua today (Tiger Cave Temple), one of Thailand's most famous forest temples. The main hall is built into a long, shallow limestone cave with dozens of 'kuti' (monastic cells) built into various cliffs and caves. Began with a walk through part of the rain forest where smaller caves are. Little huts are homes to Buddhist monks who live on the site. Very humid. Lots of wonderful sounds from the various creatures that live in the forest - and we saw a chipmunk. The site swarms with monkeys, who proved to be the highlight of the day. When Heidi and Jane set off to climb the 1200 steps to the top of a 600m karst peak, I sat for nearly two hours watching them feeding, playing in the waterfall and stealing people's belongings. One of them jumped into my lap, so I held fast to my stuff. Another very politely and gently took my almost empty water bottle and proceeded to sit next to me and drink what was left! I saw one steal a baby's bottle and another lady only managed to rescue her shoe by giving one something else! One of the monkeys was carrying a tiny baby beneath its tummy. Fascinating creatures. Also the usual crowd of stray dogs and some tiny kittens lying in the dust and the heat. An interesting departure from the beach days we have been experiencing. Went into the Tiger Cave Temple - lots of Buddha statues as you would expect, and a couple of monks. Good photo opportunity. The Thai people are also a superstitious people. Women walk down the middle of busy roads selling strings of flowers, which drivers hang in their car windows for good luck.
Well, that's all for now. Thanks again for all your messages.
