I really have got to stop asking "Can this day be better than yesterday?" It seems each day is better than the previous one. I'm a little afraid for tomorrow......I don't know if my poor self can take all this exciting adventure stuff!!
Today we took the train to our next adventure, a visit to Palm Jumeirah. This is a development designed to look like a palm tree. The trunk of the tree hosts businesses and residential and then each of the fronds is a street of all homes. All of the homes on the frond are one of two layouts but can be different style designs.....Mediterranean, Spanish, etc. At the end of the frond, the investors have their piece of island to build a villa as they wish. Wow, were there some gorgeous villas! On the breakwater, at the top of the palm, sits The Atlantis. Very much the same design as The Atlantis in the Bahamas. As we were returning, we stopped at another of the Jumeirah hotels and were able to get a tour. Again, amazing rooms with wonderful views.
Our next stop was The Mall of the Emirates. This mall comes complete with a ski/snowboard slope! More of the same mix of high end stores, American chains and Middle Eastern stores. Lots of restaurants and a nice sized food court too.
We were then off to visit Nakheel, the company behind the Burj's, the Palm Jumeirah and The World. The World is a group of man made islands that are arranged to look like a map of the world. Right now, there is one villa on Greenland and a beach resort on Lebanon. The resort is only for day use right now, but will be expanded in the future. They've also started work on part of Central Europe. We were able to see the palm and The World by boat, which also gave us an amazing view of the Dubai skyline. The crazy thing here is that when you look in the distance, it looks like smog or haze hanging over the city. It's not.....it's the sand blowing around!
Our day ended with some dune bashing. I have not had that much fun since Laura and I did the baja chase in Las Vegas. For this one, we were in 7 seat SUV's and we went cruising over the dunes. There were times I looked out my window and instead of seeing the horizon, I was seeing the base of a dune! And we caught some serious air a couple of times flying over the edge of the dunes.
After watching the sunset over the desert, we were treated to a dinner in a Bedouin style camp, complete with pillows on the floors next to the tables while sitting under a tent. I rode my first camel......wow is that a view from up there, and we were entertained by a belly dancer as well.
We headed back to Dubai Mall for the rest of the evening to watch the fountains. It's similar to what you see at Bellagio in Las Vegas, but still completely spectacular. I'm completely exhausted, so I'll say good night. Tomorrow is another big day......we're headed to Abu Dahbi. Let's see what kind of adventure I can find there!!
