Ok, the only reason for that title is because Bob and Peter were singing it as we waited for the bus and there was almost a full moon....but how appropriate??? Today we decided to try and go to mass at St. Peter's at the Vatican. The key word here being "try"! There was a HUGE line of people waiting to get in, so we decided to just wander around the square and do some shopping until it was time for the Pope to appear. While we were waiting, we had a small rain shower and it was really pretty cool to see all the umbrellas come up in the square as the rain came down! There were a lot of people there!! We waited about an hour and a half, only to find out the Pope Benedict isn't in Rome this weekend!!! He was "live via satellite", so not sure that counts....guess I'll have to come back!
After a somewhat lazy morning, we grabbed lunch and some gelato before heading off to see the Capuccin Crypts. This was the most interesting tour stop yet! This is a crypt where monks and friars from the 15th and 16th centuries were "buried". However, rather than bury them as you normally would, they took the bones of these monks and friars and used them to create artwork in the crypts! It was amazing and disturbing at the same time!! Very interesting though. From here, we decided to stay in the same vein of touring and we were off to the Catacombs of Priscilla.
These catacombs are said to be the smaller and more intimate catacombs, and yet, there were 40,000 graves located along 7 miles of catacombs under this church! It was on three levels (we were only able to see the top level) and there were some amazing works of art in these catacombs as well. One of them thought to be the first painting of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. It was good to discover that I'm not claustrophobic as this tour took us way below ground and a long ways back into the catacombs. But it was very interesting to see how they used to bury the dead.
By now, we were getting hungry, so we decided to make our way to a new area for supper. However, along the way we had to stop and check out some more ruins. It turns out these ruins were the National Museum of Rome. We also discovered that they were having a concert, so we stayed and listened for awhile. This was also where Vicki got her "It's all about me" picture taken. Guess that leaves Patrick and me with only two more touring days till home :( I think Patrick has decided to do his Tuesday (Vatican tour day) and I'm going tomorrow (Assisi and Perugia). We finally made our way to the Piazza del Popolo where we found a very nice Trattorio/Pizzeria for dinner. And once again, we didn't go away hungry or disappointed! We wandered back to the Spanish Steps after dinner and and just sat and watched the people for awhile before heading back to the hotel.
Well, the tour leaves at the crack of dawn tomorrow, so I'm off to bed. Hopefully I'll be able to load some pictures tomorrow! Good night all!!
