Karen's Aussie Extravaganza
We have just got back from our 2 night / 3 day sailing trip round the Whitsunday Islands. I dont even know what to tell you first! i have never seen anything so beautifull as what i have these last few days, it has really been the most amazing experience of my life, its been the best part of my trip so far definatley!
The boat we stayed on "Figaro" was a small sailing boat, it held 10 passengers and 2 crew members. The crew Joel and Megan were brilliant, the othere 10 were really nice too, we were all the same age group so we had a really good laugh.
Snorkling in the Great Barrier Reef was so brilliant we did this at Dumbell island, the fish were amazing, and it was all so clear you could see everything, the fish were all rainbow coloured, and some very big ones too! i was a bit worried about getting stung by a box jellyfish but we had a rather atractive(not) stinger suit to wear which stops the sting getting to you. I took lots of underwater pictures, hope they come out good! Em and i just kept looking at each other and laughing, not a good idea as you then swallow lots of water!
Sailing on the boat was so relaxing, we had great weather for it, it had been raining all the week before, but didn'nt rain once for us, just bright blue skys! It was so great bcus you see so much while your on the boat we saw lots of turtles! they are very cute, really big too! and also lots more dolphins! The whitsunday Island itself was so so so gorgeous, The sand was white and so fine and getting in the water was like getting in the bath! we couldn't stay there too long as you can burn there so easily as everythiing reflects.
Itwas so nice laying on the deck at night, all chilling out, drinking, music in the background and just having a laugh while laying there looking up at the stars, i saw so many shooting stars, never seen them before, saw the milky way, and had loads of star constilations pointed out to me that ive never seen.
Last night Joel took us to a bay where it was pitch black at night apart from the stars and there are lots of Phorophorous Plankton in the sea, ive heard of this before but never really thoughtanything of it, but i can honestly say this was one of the best bits of the trip! The plankton are tiny, just like a little speck so you cant see it but what it does is let of light when its excited. If you run your foot through he water it leaves a trail of light behind it. Joel got in the speed boat and drove round in big circle's and all you could see were these bright lights in the sea, millions and millions of them lighting up! It was like there were floodlights in the sea, so amazing. I went out in the speed boat also to see what it looked like, very cool. Cant really explain what it was like to watch as it just sounds silly! Trust me if yu saw it you would be like wow!
As you can imagine i really didn't want to get of the boat today, ive had so much fun, really wish we had done a longer sailing trip now. I could honestly stay here at Airlie beach forever, i love it so much!
We leave here on Thursday though, going further south, Fraser Island next i think. Em is trying to Pursuade me to do a sky dive with her over the reef, not sure yet though! Think i will probly do it though, why not.
Will send another card soon.
Wish you were here!
