Happiness Is The Road
We got up late and had a very lazy morning. After lunch we went and got the bus into the city. Darwin isn't a massive city compared with other state capitals and has a population of only about 75,000. By going into Darwin I have now been to every state and territory capital in Australia. Jay though has still got to see Perth before she has done every one. I'm saving the best one till last for her! Darwin city centre is very compact and was easy to navigate. It was very tropical here. We had a mooch around the shops first and then we walked to the seafront and saw the ocean for the first time in ages. We then wandered across to the Darwin Waterfront complex which is a mix of apartments, shops, hotels and a swimming lagoon. I was going to go for a swim but changed my mind when confronted with the sign warning of stingers. It wasn't worth the risk. Instead we sat on the grass in the shade for a while. We relaxed and watched the scene before us. It was like watching an episode of Baywatch including one guy who was the spitting image of 'The Hoff' wearing the smallest pair of trunks we have ever seen! Unbelievable!!! All grossed out after this we headed back to the city and caught another bus out to the suburb of Mindil Beach for the sunset market. There is a famous market at Mindil Beach every Thursday and Sunday evening and as it was Thursday today we'd timed our trip to Darwin very nicely. The market was just starting to get busy when we got there just before 5. There were heaps of stalls selling food and all sorts of interesting art and crafts. We had a good look around and soaked up the atmosphere. The market was right behind the beach and we had a quick walk along the beach and felt the sand between our toes. This was the first beach we had been on since being in Queensland weeks ago. We watched the sun set and then we got a bus to the city centre and then another one back to the Free Spirit Resort. The camper van was roasting when we got back. It was another red hot night but our trusty fan cooled us and got us through.
