Happiness Is The Road
We left our wonderful sea view at Takapuna after brekky and left Auckland for the second time. On our way out of the city we needed to visit Mighty Campers near the airport to get a snagging list of problems we've had with the camper van sorted out. We drove south along the motorway and past the impressive city skyline for one last time. We successfully managed to navigate the confusing Auckland road system today and got to Mighty with no problems. Our snagging list read as follows:-
* SINK STILL LEAKING (Despite a 'fix' a couple of weeks ago water is still dripping out into our drawers!)
* RIGHT HAND GAS BURNER WILL NOT STAY ALIGHT
* SIDE SLIDING DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK ON 1ST ATTEMPT (We have to unlock/lock/unlock anything between three and seven times to get in or out of this door - The light show from the indicators flashing we're frantically clicking the key is impressive though!)
* GEAR STRICK k*** IS LOOSE (It sprang off like a jack-in-a-box whilst driving a few days ago!)
* AMBER LIGHT SHOWING ON DASH
* A BROKEN BUCKET!!!!
We had phoned them a few days ago and were booked in to get things sorted. When we got there a really nice guy came out to see us and we reeled off our list to him. He joked that we could have three new buckets if we wanted and we asked him to refill our gas bottle which he agreed to do. We then went to sit down on the sofas in the reception whilst we waited. It was quite strange to be sitting on a sofa but it was very comfy. Whilst sat there we got talking to a really lovely British couple who were waiting to collect their camper van and the time past really quickly. We gave them some helpful hints and told them some nice places to go up near the Bay of Islands. We also told them to expect impatient, arrogant, crazy drivers. After about an hour and a half our camper was ready to go. We had a shining new blue bucket, a full bottle of gas and we were told that everything had been sorted. The sink looked a right mess but if it didn't leak anymore it was good. We were told to leave the sink for 24 hours. They weren't confident though that the door would be any better and when the key was clicked the door failed to open. It did open second time though so slightly better than before! With our new bucket rattling behind us we hit the road in the direction of the Coromandel Peninsula. We stopped just outside Auckland at a New World supermarket in Papakura and then carried on to a place called Miranda on the Firth of Thames just opposite the Coromandel Peninsula. I didn't want to drive any further today. The landscape was very green and flat here and we could see the hills of the Coromandel glistening across the water. The camp site was okay and had a thermal pool but it was full of skanky looking people so we didn't bother. We did have a picnic table though. With regards to the snagging list the gear stick is solid, the amber light is out, the gas burner will now stay alight and the new bucket is gorgeous. The door though is still being an awkward *******. It is letting us in/out in an average of three attempts so not too bad! We'll try the sink tomorrow.
