Happiness Is The Road
Check out time was noon which was good so we took our time this morning and had a lie in and leisurely breakfast. Just before noon we hit the road to continue with our inland loop and avoid the marauding Easter hordes. We had decided to stay at either Forbes or Parkes tonight and just chill out there for the day. We got to Forbes and decided to move on as there wasn't much there. A short while later we got to Parkes and with hindsight realised that we should have stopped at Forbes. The sign on the way in to Parkes stated that it was twinned with Coventry UK. This was not looking good but we couldn't be bothered going anywhere else and we didn't think that anybody would think this a good Easter destination. We were right as the caravan park we chose was more or less deserted. We spotted the Parkes Highway Caravan Park on the way in. The sign outside exclaimed that it was the cheapest and best and that it was a short walk to club, whatever this was. It all sounded quite promising. We rocked up at the reception and I got out to go and check us in. I pulled on the fly door to slide it open and it came off in my hands! With the door still in my hands I weighed up my options. Should I leg it back to the camper and leave or do I stay and try to explain how I came to accidentally vandalise the door! The decision was taken out of my hands as a small Chinese woman suddenly appeared from behind the remaining good door. I apologised about the door and she said that it was fine as it was already broken. This door incident should have been a warning but I stupidly chose not to take notice of it. I paid our money for the night, a rather harsh $26 with hindsight, and we went to find a suitable spot to spend the rest of the day. Other than one touring caravan and a load of extremely scruffy permanent caravans we seemed to be the only people there. We couldn't help feeling that we were being watched although at the moment there were no other humans in site. The place was very uncared for and pretty creepy. I wandered over to the amenities for a pee and saw two goats tethered up near the gents! Why the hell were there goats here? The amenities were awful. They were the worst so far on our travels, very grim and dirty. We sat in the back of the camper and read our books and listened to music. A short while later a very strange looking woman with greasy straggly hair and a dull raincoat (it was sunny today) walked past and out of the site pulling and old suitcase on wheels behind her. Was she going on the short walk to the club? What type of club was it? About an hour later she came back and past us pulling the suitcase behind her again. It seemed to be a lot lighter now. I went to the gents again a short while later and noticed that the goats had now gone! Was this purely coincidence or had she taken the goats to the club? Our minds boggled and fortunately we will never know. There were a few other people about now but they all looked a bit weird and scary. This was looking like an episode of Psychoville! We had our tea outside, but kept our guard, and enjoyed some home made sugar free chocolate mousse which Jay made. We had to do this as it was Easter Sunday. The only way we could get chocolate without sugar was to make our own. It was sweetened naturally with honey and was absolutely delicious. We locked all the camper doors and went to bed early. This place felt slightly dangerous like we imagine the USA to feel. We didn't know what creatures may be about in the dark here. We tried to sleep and hoped that nothing would go bump in the night.
