Happiness Is The Road
After brekky and with clean clothes on for the first time in ages we hit the road. We are working our way up the coast to Byron Bay, a place that we have heard so much about and are looking forward to visiting. It's still quite a long way from here and we decided to drive for a couple more hours up the coast today. We hoped that we might be able to find somewhere on the coast that wasn't too busy. We found a camp site at a place called Moonee Beach and phoned ahead to see if we could get in. They had plenty of space left. On the way we saw signs for Fredo Pies. They advertised that they did loads of different varieties with some of them involving crocodiles and emus. We stopped at one of their shops which was just off the main highway. I was wanting to try an emu pie but they didn't have any. I opted instead for a crocodile pie. It was pretty yummy. On the drive today we both noticed how the scenery is becoming more and more tropical looking the further north we are going. The weather today was quite overcast and it was a bit dull when we arrived at the camp site. I asked on reception for as quiet a site as possible. I always use the excuse that we are very tired but in reality it is because we hate being near people as with relatively few exceptions they are horribly inconsiderate. Some of the time camp site receptionists seem to think that quiet means being right next to other people but today the lovely lady on reception had taken notice and we found our way to a nice secluded spot. The problem though was that it was over a big patch of grass that had become quite sodden due to all the rainfall that this area has had recently. We set up but the power point was too far away for or cable to reach. We moved to the site next to it where the cord would have reached but this involved a slope on the very saturated grass. The only way out was up and with rain threatening we thought that if we stayed here we might get stuck in the morning. We thought it would be better to go somewhere else. As I drove the van away the wheels started slipping and I lost all traction. I reversed back and tried to go again but it was worse this time and the wheels got well and truly stuck in what was now mud. The camper wouldn't go forwards or backwards! We went back to reception and exclaimed that we were stuck! The lovely lady on reception got her husband to come over with his 4X4 and a tow rope. She looked sheepish and he looked annoyed with her. He didn't have a very good towing rope but after a couple of attempts we were free but with extremely muddy tyres. We went to another part of the camp site where we couldn't get stuck and which was also luckily pretty quiet. Just after we'd got ourselves positioned we heard thunder and the rain started. It was heavy rain and it lashed down for a few hours. We were happy though in our now unstuck gorgeous little camper that is our home.
