Happiness Is The Road
We got up,showered, and went to have breakfast elsewhere. We drove along the coast to Lake Cathie and had brekky in the camper near the beach. We had a mooch along the beach here and a bit of a paddle and then we drove a bit further up the coast to Port Macquarie. Our destination was the Koala Hospital. There is a large koala population around Port Mcquarie and there has been a hospital for them here since 1973. It is a charity and run by volunteers who rescue and treat sick and injured koalas. There were quite a few koalas here today in outdoor enclosures with trees and plenty of their favourite eucalyptus leaves. They were all amazingly cute and it was good to see them being cared for and looked after so well. When they have recovered they are released back into the wild or if they are unable to care for themselves they live out their days at the hospital. The first koala we saw 'Westhaven Barry' is a permanent resident. He suffers from scoliosis and kyphosis which means his spine is curved outwards as well as to the side. Sometimes he finds breathing difficult. Barry was found in the middle of the road at Westhaven. He was in a poor condition on admission in July 2008. His coat was thin and brown in colour and his muscle tone was very poor. He looked so soft and loving but also very wise and knowing. He is an absolutely beautiful animal. We really enjoyed looking at all the koalas. An especially cute girl koala put on a bit of a show for us. She climbed the tree she was in, she ate her leaves and she even got down and ran across the ground like she was doing a little jig. Koalas look so amazing when they are moving across the ground. We spent absolutely ages here. Our enjoyment was disrupted for a while though when a really annoying family turned up. They seemed to have ignored the signs which asked you to be quiet and not use flash photography. Their cameras kept flashing and the guy kept banging on the enclosures to get the koalas attention. The poor little loves were trying to sleep and eat, what a complete d*** this guy was and typical of so many people. People are generally just so inconsiderate. Two other girls turned up shrieking and making a hell of a noise. The poor koalas eyed them with what looked like contempt. From the size of the girls ***** it looked to us like they were probably high on Mars bars and McDonalds!!! We went to the shop on the way out and bought some cards and other koala related items in order to do our bit to support them. We had a lovely time here and it is one of the best places we have been to in Australia. We then went back to the camper and had a spot of lunch before driving to a place on the coast called Crescent Head. We had intended to stay the night here but because it is school holidays the camp site was absolutely rammed with lots of potentially annoying looking people. We put plan B into action and drove back inland to Kempsey. The caravan park here was nice and really quiet. This was bliss. We chilled here for the rest of the day.
