We arrived in Brisbane in the darkness, parted with Elena who was going to stay with relatives and set off to find our hostel. We had decided to walk and save $5 it was only supposed to take 20 minutes or so but we ended up walking in the wrong direction for a kilometre so it took us a bit longer. That night, we splashed out on a proper dinner and spent the night in the hostel bar.
We treated ourselves to a lie in but this meant that we didn't actually get outside until 2 in tje afternoon. The day was spent walking through shops until it got dark, which was only 3 hours later. We went out that night, exploring a bit of Brisbane's nightlife and found a fairly decent bar (decent as in, they didn't play any Rhianna, Usher or their friends). We acquired a stalker who we ended up running from when he went to the toilet and met THE campest man- mickey mouse jumper, kilt, high heels exact mannerisms of Jack from Will and Grace. It ended up being a good night albeit ridiculously expensive- $12 for a Magners?!
We had to check out in the morning and move to a hostel closer to the transit centre as our bus the next day was at 7am. We did the touristy things but there wasn't all that much to do. We visited a couple of art galleries and a museum. I really don't get art but had fun making up the 'meanings behind' the pictures and had a couple of them match the descriptions! We had a quick meet up with Elena and then headed back to the hostel. This was one of the worst hostel's I've stayed at outside of Asia. The kitchen was dirty and we were a bit apprehensive of touching anything in there and you could see mould growing in our bedroom. We decided to go to the DVD room to watch a film, but when we got there found a pretty empty room with just a TV and a bench. We managed to get a DVD player from reception and watched Pineapple Express before a cold night's sleep due to a window which wouldn't close... It was then up at 6.30 to catch the bus down to Byron Bay
