We did a lot of travelling in Indonesia. After flying into Bali we stayed in Kuta for a night, wandering around the market stalls and loving the cheap food. We had to get up early the next day to get our bus and boat to the Gili islands. However, we found that by going with the cheapest company possible, we really did get what we paid for. We had to spend a night on Lombok instead of getting to Gili Trawangen on the same day. The night wasn't too bad, we stayed in a fairly nice place, although the town we were in didn't have much going on.
The next day we finally got to Gili Trawangen and met up with Elena, Holly and Sophie. Although we think we got into the wrong boat to get there. Instead of sharing the little boat with other tourists, we found ourselves surrounded by baskets of bananas and other fruits and vegetables. We spent the day chilling on the beach and wandering up and down the main road of the small island. We found that we were sharing our rooms with a variety of insects. There was a point when three cockroaches were discovered in one of the bathrooms. This led to much screaming and some guy running around to find out what was going on. Now, I wouldn't class myself as someone who is scared of insects, but when I was trying to kill one cockroach and another scuttled over my foot, a screaming is completely involuntary!
Elena, Holly and Sophie all left the next day to see one of the other islands- Meno and Grace and I stayed on Trawangen. We sunbathed for a bit and then walked around the island. It's only small and took around 90 minutes, we stopped and watched the sunset from one of the beaches. The Lonely Planet says that you can see the sun set behind a volcano on Bali, but once again, it was wrong. It was still nice though. There was supposed to be a party happening that night but it didn't turn out to be too much.
After two days we left, having to get up early to make the little boat back to Lombok, but we could have easily spent longer on there, it's a nice place to just chill out. They don't have any cars or motorbikes on the islands, the only transport is horse and carraige (arguably more annoying than motorbikes) and bicycles.
