Saturday the weather was a disaster! The lady at our B&B informed us it hadn't been this wet & cold here in Spring since 1957. We spent the day in & out of shops & cafes just to dodge the weather. We were feeling rather flat & even looked at options to head somewhere dry! Things have improved & yesterday & today were brilliant. We did visit a museum Saturday in a lovely old residence which contained an art collection of some guy who was famous here. It was quite interesting & the photos of the Parisians from the late 1800s & early 1900s depicting how the fashions evolved were amusing.
A visit for afternoon tea to a beautiful English tea house which was packed lifted my spirits. John felt it was more a girls day out thing, so you must all pop over! It was very quaint & would be a real hit at home.
Yesterday we headed to the other side of the river to Villeneuve lez Avignon & apart from climbing hundreds of steps for amazing views we had a very relaxing day. It was very quiet over there & mostly locals out with their children for Sunday lunch. Did think we should be wearing pedometers to see how many kms we actually walk however shoes wearing out fast is a good indication.
We had a quiet morning around Avignon this am & booked a tour for this pm. Quite amazing for us as we are not the tour on a bus type! However to get to this hilltop village Gordes in Provence we had to do a tour. There were no public transport options to get there. It turned out to be a lovely afternoon with a great French guide & some interesting people on the tour.
Gordes the hilltop village is stunning, the photos don't do it justice. The village on the cliff face with the flag called Les Baux de Provence is the second most popular medieval village in France however we thought Tassie has similar rock faces, just without the medieval village.
The final visit was to Le Pont De Gard one of the best preserved Roman aqueducts & it was a real highlight. Built around 2000 years ago it formed part of a 50km aqueduct system that transported spring water to the city of Nimes. The water ran along the top in a covered channel. If you look closely at the bridge you will see dots which are people on it. It was massive & we were down near the river.
The drive in the countryside today brought back memories of when we drove around in 2000. It is lovely driving through the villages & you see so much more of the countryside than when you are on trains or buses. Avignon is a walled city which apparently had the gates around the wall shut for the first time in a decade Saturday night due to floods in the river. We didn't find this out until today.
The day finished with a great meal & a humerous waiter. We are off to Aix-en-Provence tomorrow for the day on the train early in the am. We haven't fallen in love with Avignon however glad we've experienced it. One of the highlights was today & the other has been all the people from different countries we've met at the B&B & on the tour. The countryside is beautiful & quite distinct from other parts of France we've seen. It would be stunning when the lavender is out.
