After my first sleep-in in quite some time I woke to the smiles of my host family. They had gone out and brought me breakfast - a wonderful salad with bacon, egg and sausage - you would think I was royalty. We headed off to a competition which was all about traditional Aboriginal Dance; 13 Indigenous groups from all across Taiwan would compete to represent Taiwan at some even bigger event. The whole thing was quite strange and there were about 2000 people in attendance - the dances lasted about 20 minutes and the music was to be honest terribly painful to listen to with the bad P.A system. I battled to keep my eyes open and after 6 long grueling hours of bad music and an unrecognizable language it was over. I feel bad I couldn't enjoy it but there were 4 hours of talking all in mandarine and it was very hard for me to work out what the hell was going on. After the performance we went with the local Toruku tribe (Dylan's tribe) out to an amazing seafood resteraunt on the waterfront. It was quite hilarious they busted out the beers and got on it at lunch time cheersing every 5 minutes. The seafood was some of the best I have ever had, mussels & tofu in sweet/sour sauce, king prawns with little batter, sashimi with wasabi, mullet pressed (unbelievably delicious), boiled fish stomach, mumbo fish, seaweed stirfry, baby squid in ink and black bean and fish soup. As always I ate and ate and made myself incredibly full- it is something the Taiwanese love to do is eat socialize and eat some more and when in Taiwan - do as the Taiwanese do. This country continues to impress me and the people continuously shock me with the generosity and openness. We had to drop by Dylan's school before heading to supermarket to pick up some bits and pieces for dinner. For dinner we headed to Dylan's Principles house where there was about 6 other teachers. Everyone cooked something - I decided to cook something I had learned here in Taiwan adding my own little twist - basically ratatouille and scrambled egg in a thick red wine and soy sauce. Other dishes included a pork and veg soup, satay veg/pork and 1000 year egg, Toruku veg special, ginger fish, green veg and a number of other untranslatable dishes. Another feast where I couldn't help but stuff my face - I am getting worried now I have been eating double what I usually eat and I guess it will catch up with me soon enough if I am not careful. After dinner we hit the karaoke room and started on the red wine and beer. Taiwanese love karaoke and are really good at it - it wasn't long before more food came out - local aboriginal fern and fish, boiled octopus and some salted vegetable root - when in Taiwan you eat! Two of Dylan's cousins came around (both around my age) and joined us for more drinking and Karaoke. They really love karaoke here too, so much so that everyone is racing to put songs in. After 4 hours straight on the karaoke, 24 big beers and 1 bottle of wine it was time to call it a night.
