France Vs Switzerland!! First thing this morning I had to go see the Suriname consulate and see if my application for a visa had been successful. Luckily Nicola was heading into the centre again so I was able to catch a lift with him. With some luck my visa had been approved and I am now officially allowed into Suriname. There is a market 3 times a week here in Cayenne and today is one of those days so I went for a look. The market was quite interesting but unfortunately very expensive so I just wondered around sampling a few new fruits, watching people and doing my best not to get sucked into paying $7 a kilo for avocado. By 11am the heat was too much so I made my way out to the highway to try my luck at hitchiking back to Matoury. Luckily I was the only one on the stretch of road today and after about half hour a French guy picked me up and took me about half the way to Matoury. I then had to stand back out on the road and try again and to go with that it started to rain. Once again with luck on my side a Brazilian guy stopped and picked me up and drove me the rest of the way to Matoury. A short walk back to Nicos and I was glad to be out of the torrential downpour and the scorching sun. I relaxed the rest of the afternoon and when Nicos son got back we agreed to watch the big match between France and Switzerland together at 4pm. Although I find football incredibly boring I was able to get into this game a little more as it was incredibly high-scoring. In the end France won 5-2 and Nico's son ran around the house like a maniac celebrating the win which was quite funny to watch. Nico returned and we sorted a few things out and I showed Tetoun how to do some basic yoga so he could practice for his Capoeira class. Tetoun then helped me prepare dinner whilst Nico ran around like a mad-man sorting things out, doing his gardening and he even managed to sort me a lift to Saint-Laurent on Monday for 15 euro. After dinner Nico offered to take me to the city beach which we had heard rumors that the giant leatherback turtles were nesting at. We arrived at the beach and there were cars and people and much to Nico's surprise the turtles were in fact there and there were many of them. I really can't explain how incredible it was witnessing the first of the many Giant Leatherback turtles - the thing was the size of me but probably double or triple my weight. The first one was in the process of turning its eggs and helping its little ones break-out of their shells- how lucky can I be? Seeing this beautiful act of nature. The beach was covered in theses gigantic reptiles and there were more and more coming from the sea: the conditions were perfect as the tide was high and the turtles didn't have far to go up the beach. The beach was like a scene from a war movie with huge bunkers and holes everywhere where the turtles had scurried up the beach. Nico and I walked along with our red light (designed to protect the turtles) spotting one giant turtle after the next and even seeing 3 of its very rare and smaller brother - Green turtle. I am not going to lie I was nervous and a little scared walking along the beach with these almost dinosaur like creatures half buried in the sand. Another pinch yourself moment that I have been told happens nowhere else in the world and just so happens to be happening at this very moment here in Cayenne. After a few hours of admiring the giant reptiles we called it a night and made our way back to Nicos.
