S21 Genocide Museum!! Today is my first full day in Phnom Penh and after little to no sleep (trying to get used to massive change in time) I was up super early. I did a bit of an abdominal workout then packed my bag and made my way to the central market for breakfast. There were so many good things on offer but in the end I decided on this little place selling sweet bean and vegetable porridge things. I asked the lady if I could sample everything and so she kindly piled a bowl full of a little of everything - another amazing meal and one I could certainly get used to everyday. It was still very early and luckily not too hot yet so I started my big walk to the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace was huge and full of tourist buses and people piling in to see the famous temple - I decided I had seen enough Royal buildings and after snapping a few photos continued on. I passed a few monuments, snapped some photos and then continued on towards the S21 Genocide museum. On the way I stopped for some fresh coconut water that was absolutely delicious and after all the walking the perfect refreshment. I made it to the S21 museum paid my entrance fee and joined the mass of tourists wondering around this old school turned prison. The place was incredibly depressing and I got an idea of the atrocities that occurred here. The rooms were layed out as they were in the regime and gruesome photos were displayed to convey the tragedy. As I walked around I got a horrible sense of the violence that occurred at the prison and the photos and buildings confirmed it. It's not something I like to do and I had to fight my urge to leave the whole time but in the end I am glad I visited and learned a bit about Cambodia's tragic past. Continuing on I made my way to the Russian market and was met by an overwhelming amount of shops selling everything from food sorts to souvenirs. I wondered around in search of something for lunch and after a few hours settled on some delicious sprout salad followed by some sweet bean and banana porridge desert. I was a long way from my hostel and the heat was intense but I decided to walk back anyway and see what I might find on the way. I came across some more interesting markets and shops and passed the Olympic stadium before finally making my back to the hostel after 5pm. My dorm room had a few more people in it now so I chatted a while and got some ideas on places to visit in Cambodia before taking a much needed shower. In the evening I made my way back to the night market and booked my bus to Siem Reap for tommorow morning. I then headed back to the night market and went for some more delicious papaya salad - however at a different place this time. This papaya salad was even better then last nights with dried shrimp and crushed crab in the mix. After dinner it was back to the hostel and another early night to bed to try and get over the jet-lag.
